Ok this is killing me. I've tried chatting with support and this is what I get... at one point he goes completely off topic and starts talking about some random problem.

"Hi, my name is Mel. Welcome to Apple!
Brendon Bauer: Hi, I am having trouble getting MobileMe to remember to sort my email by date.
Brendon Bauer: I can click on the date column in the header, and it will be sorted by date. But if I log out and back in, it no longer remembers that.
Mel: Hi Brendon, I see your message and I'll be glad to assist you. Is this something you have contacted us about in the past or the first time you've contacted MobileMe chat support about this?
Brendon Bauer: First time
Mel: Great! I understand MobileMe Calendar at me.com is not retaining the information you enter, correct?
Brendon Bauer: No, I am having trouble with email, not calendar. Like I said previously, it does not remember that I want my email sorted by date.
Mel: I'll be right with you.
Mel: I see. Give me a moment to look over your account to see what I can find.
Mel: Everything looks good on our end. I logged you out, please log back in and see if the issue still occurs here:
Mel: http://www.me.com/mail
Brendon Bauer: Yep, still happens. My emails are not sorted by date received...
Mel: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment.
Mel: Ok, which web browser are you using?
Brendon Bauer: I have tried it on Safari 4 and Firefox 3.5
Mel: Ok, so the issue occurs with both web browser. Have you tested on a different computer?
Brendon Bauer: Yeah, I've tested it on the computer at work and at home. I'm pretty sure it's a bug in the MobileMe service that needs to be fixed.
Mel: It might be something on your account, let's try a test account.
Mel: I'm creating a test account and I'll be right with you.
Mel: Thanks for waiting. Log into this temporary test account to see if the issue occurs there:

Brendon Bauer: Yep, still happens there. I don't think MobileMe can currently remember that you want emails sorted by date. Are they going to fix this in the future?
Mel: Let me try to reproduce the issue here.
Mel: I'm unable to reproduce the issue. My email is sorted by date with the most recent appearing at the top of the window. Is it possible that I have misunderstood the issue?
Mel: I have not heard from you for a few moments. Are you still with me?

Brendon Bauer: Well if you use a test account it only has 1 email in the inbox, so you can't really tell. I have used mobileme for awhile and it appears that emails are sorted by date, but not completely. I have emails from "yesterday" at the top, with a few from today below those, and then older emails below that. So you haven't misunderstood me. My emails are not sorted by date correctly. I have been researching this problem on the internet and have found others with the same issue."

Has anybody else here experienced this problem? I have found some cases of it around the web, but no solution... I hope they fix this soon! Very annoying...

I told them about this a year ago and they still haven't done anything. Pathetic. They say its not on their list of things to fix. Something that could so easily be fixed with a simple config file or even a cookie.

My problem was when importing my mail from one mail server to mobileme. It would import them fine, but but default, MobileMe mail sorts the emails by the order they entered that mailbox. Each message is given a number and if they don't import in the order they were received, they will not sort by date by default.

This has stopped me using the mail service as such a simple thing should not happen. All my emails are the basic repsonse of 'we don't think its important, piss off' kind of replies.

Annoying.

I've contacted about this issue using online chat around 2 weeks ago, I was then transferred to an MobileMe Specialist (through email), then after he tested the issue, he transferred me to the MM Engineering team, didn't hear from them since.(1 week already passed)

Well this alone is enough to stop me from using MobileMe beyond the initial trial... I already have enough problems getting syncing set up so it doesn't conflict over the air and through iTunes. I guess I may try out MobileMe in the future to see if they have corrected this. It seems that MobileMe is still very young and needs much work. Until then I will continue to use Gmail I guess.

True, I'm only using MM because of the Push email function for the iPhone (Yahoo sucks) :(

I'm bumping this thread, because this just happened to me as well!

Plus: This propagates to the iPhone: if I open an email folder on my iPhone, they are sorted with SENT on top, meaning I can only see my own emails (which is quite useless, because more often than not I want to read what people sen TO me...)
This is obviously extra annoying on the iPhone as there is no way to re-sort them other than what your served, plus after twentyfive messages or so, you have to hit load to get further down the list. So, to get to lates incoming message, you'll have to dig deep...

I think this happens only to folder with many (in my case 200 emails) because I have no problems with my regular inbox.

If anyone has any solution whatsoever, please let me know!

AHHHHHH! Same thing just happened to me. I'm supper annoyed by this. I have about 1500 emails and they're all out of order. I almost feel like just re-importing all my messages one by one, starting with the oldest first. That's the only way I can see fixing this problem. :(

Can you guys post a screenshot of what's happening? I'm able to sort my emails by date fine...
The problem stems from importing your emails into MobileMe. On me.com/iPhone/iPad the default for those is to display email based on which ones came into the server last. If you import your email to MobileMe then all of the emails will be out of order because the import order of emails is random. Sure you can sort your emails in the mail.app by date, but the default for all other devices including me.com is to sort by which came in to the server last. And on iPhone OS devices there's no way to sort by date. It's just annoying is all.

What I ended up doing is importing all my messages from 2010 one by one into my inbox in the mail.app. So all of my messages from 2010 are in order but everything else isn't. Took about 15 minutes to do.

The solution to this problem is to use Mozilla Thunderbird for the copy operation to mobileme. Thunderbird keeps the dates intact and copies one by one in order of oldest to newest.
