Those friendly folks at the Apple store gave me a years subscription to MobileMe for free because I had some problems getting an iPhone. However, I've known about .Mac and MobileMe for the last 5 years and have never had any intention of purchasing it.

However, I need to rethink the way I store my photos as my wife has just bought a new camera (Canon Rebel, very nice) so I expect there will be an explosion in the number of photos taken. Up until now I've just kept a select few on our personal website created in Rapid Weaver. But its a pain to update Rapid Weaver and it runs really slowly on our old Powerbook. My web host doesn't give me much storage space either

So, I want to upload all of our photos to a dedicated photo hosting site. I've looked at Flickr, Photobucket, Photoshop.com and several others but feel that Picasa and MobileMe seem to be the best. What are your thoughts?

At the moment, I have MobileMe for 345 days and it gives me 20GB space. However, I can't use it as I currently have iPhoto 4.

Picasa only gives you 1GB but I can upload to it now using the Picasa upload tool. 10GB would cost me $20 a year.

I may buy a new Mac this year but I said that last year and it didn't happen. You know, the economy and stuff.

So I'm bit torn between the two. There are pros and cons of each. I have a Mac and an iPhone but I use Gmail and many other Google services. I just want the best integration with web apps and my devices.

It all depends on what you feel comfortable with. For me I use MobileMe and Flickr. I use MobileMe for family orientated/private photos and Flickr for interesting photos I like to see comments on. Picasa is okay but you don't really get the photocentric crowd that Flickr has.

Another advantage thar MobileMe has, along with personal websites, is that you own your content. With many of the photo sharing sites (including Picasa and Flickr) it is very murky as to how much rights you actually have. The only website I'm aware of that you have total rights over your content is SmugMug (geared towards the hardcore photographer)which also have fees to use.

Thanks, the majority of the pics will be family stuff so I'm not looking for comments from anyone.

Interesting comments about ownership.

personally, I prefer mobile me. The integration with iphone and mac can't be beat. You could probably do with an upgrade from iphoto 4 (!!) anyway. ;)

Yeah, my Powerbook came with Leopard and I upgraded to Tiger but didn't get the iLife upgrade. Up until now iPhoto 4 has been fine but better editing features in the latest version would complement the new camera, I'm sure.

The MobileMe galleries are pretty nice. You don't get a lot of customization but thats not a big deal for just family photos.

I can tell you that iPhoto 4 is not going to handle a large library of photos very well. You will really need to upgrade to a newer version. My wife still has a 12" PowerBook and it runs iPhoto '09 decently.

I just signed up today for MobileMe and find the ease of uploading iPhone pics rather appealing.

I'll see how it works out.

I've signed up for Picasa, Flickr and Zenfolio.

I've ended up using http://www.zenfolio.com. It starts at $25/yr (I have the $40 plan). PM me to get $10 off.
