Just got an email saying that the .Mac HomePage feature will be discontinued July 7, and even though your site will still be online after that date, you will not be able to edit it.

What's not clear to me is, will I still be able to use my Sites folder to upload and share files? I've never used the HomePage page creation feature, I only upload files to the Sites folder. But the address to access those sites is http://homepage.mac.com/[username], so I'm entirely clear on whether this applies to the Sites folder, or only to the webpage creation feature?

Sites folder needs to stay

The Sites folder needs to stay. Programs like Rapid Weaver uses this folder to publish to also...

From what I have read and seen (I never used Homepage, but I have access to it since I signed up 2 days before the MM conversion), I think people are confusing Homepage with the regular web hosting provided by MM (web.mobileme.com/your-name).

Homepage appears to be pretty much a web version of iWeb - canned themes/pages that you can use to build a site from the web browser instead of using iWeb.

With web.mobileme.com you can use iWeb or any other html generator (including a plain text editor if you're old-school).

Your /web directory takes the place of /sites (in the root of your iDisk, I do NOT mean /web/sites that iWeb will create/use). You can use it to share files via http, just like any other web server (or you can use the new file sharing feature in iDisk that is independent of the /web directory).

It's definitely just the HomePage site. Everyone will still be able to use iWeb and the Sites folder on their Mac to publish their webpages.
