MobileMe Newbie

Hey everyone. New to the forums and I am looking for some answers to a MobileMe question.

I just started using MM and really like it. I use it to sync my contacts, calendars, and even use the gallery to show off pics of our new baby!

As a teacher I am wanting to start using the iDisk feature as a way to store documents (MS Word, MS Excel) that I have created and use often in the classroom. And not have to carry around my thumb drive anymore.

Can I do that? My main goal is to lose the thumb drive and be able to edit and save documents to and from iDisk as I work on them. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work.

For example:
I want to edit a worksheet I have created and saved on to iDisk. So I go to MM via the web, download it, change it, print it at work, and then save the updated version to my iDisk. This way everything is automatically updated and I don't have to carry the thumb drive around and backup both computers.

Is this possible?

I am super new to MM, so any help would be great.

MM can technically do this, but is relatively clunky and at times plain unreliable. I would suggest looking at DropBox.

I use it daily to sync files from my MBP to my Win7 desktop to my Android phones. Documents sync almost instantaneously and reliably. You get 2gb free and there are plenty of chances to boost that (I have 4.4gb and haven't paid a cent yet).

MobileMe's iDisk is unreliable at best. Concider Dropbox if you plan on using MM for mostly cloud storage.

I was testing it out today, and it seems like I have to download a file, then edit it, then save it to my desktop, and finally upload it through MobileMe.

That's a lot of steps! Is DropBox easier? I guess I don't mind all the steps, I just worry about the important stuff like report cards getting lost. Again my main goal is to not have to carry around the thumb drive anymore, I lose that thing all the time, LOL.



On a side note: What I am starting to see in using MobileMe (for me at least) is that it's just a way to sync your devices without really plugging anything in.

I really like the Gallery feature, as we have family spread out through the US and sharing pictures of our newborn has been super easy.

But other than that, is MobileMe really worth all the hype? Or does it just depend on how you use it or need it?

Should I have the iDisk application on my PC at work? Or is using the web app all you need?

On a PC, it's probably best to get to your iDisk via the me.com site. You can also map the iDisk drive to Windows Explorer: here's a good guide to doing it:

Either way, you should be able to upload and download to and from your iDisk space on a PC.
