MobileMe push from all devices (except PC) finally works

If you have Leopard and are running the latest update, 10.5.6, MobileMe finally does what it was originally intended to do. I just updated to 10.5.6 and did some testing. With MobileMe on my Mac set to sync "automatically" I am able to send and receive updates within seconds of changes being made anywhere.

Update a calendar on my iPhone, my Mac updates iCal in seconds.
Update a contact on my Mac, my iPhone gets the change instantly.

The whole sync every hour worked fine for how I need to use MobileMe, but this is very cool. Nice work Apple

It's still not true Push, but since it now syncs "within one minute", I'd say that's a marked improvement!

Looks like true push to me. Try it yourself. If I change an event on my iPhone, when I click done to save it, I see network activity on my iPhone for a second, then, there is MobileMe sync activity on my Mac.

The same is true when I update something in iCal on my Mac. As soon as I click done MobileMe pushes the change up to the cloud.

Explain how that's not "true push" as you call it?

This functionality was probably intended to be true push. "Within one minute" is probably just to give them some wiggle room and help prevent the badmouthers from splitting hairs.

I think you're correct. The big change seems to be "push", or what seems more appropriately called "triggers". Now, instead of Mobileme syncing every hour, there are triggers setup in different apps like iCal, Contacts, and Safari. So now, when I make a change to events, contacts or bookmarks in these places, mobileme sync happens right then. There is a little trigger that fires.

I think this is why they have an "automatically" setting under sync options for mobileme. So, you can still set mobileme to sync every hour, or, if you set it to "automatically" then you'll make sure to sync changes to important apps like iCal, Contacts, and Safari bookmarks the instant you make changes.

yes, it deffinately is push (or some sort of triggering thing as tony4d said). i have tried it on every device i have except my pc.

When I edit an event on MobileMe, within seconds it appears on my macbook and my iPod Touch.
When i change or create an event on my mac, it appears in about 2 seconds on my iPod Touch, and in about 20 on the MobileMe web app.
When I create an event on my iPod Touch, it appears online in a few seconds (not immediate, but around 10 seconds) and mobileme sync initiates on the mac, which causes the event to appear in iCal.

That's my point, that is what is happening.

If I update a contact on my iPhone, as soon as I hit done, it sends that up to the mobileme server. A second later the server must push it to my mac, because all of a sudden mobileme sync fires up on my mac and I get that contact change I made on my iPhone.

Its not like my mac waited to do a sync until an hour had gone by since the last sync, something told my mac that it should sync, and it did.

Just for reference, as long as you had Leopard MobileMe would actually sync every 15 mins before this update, not every hour as some have previously stated. It would only sync every hour if you had Tiger.

Well, ok. The point is, rather than MobileMe syncing on a set schedule for things like calendar, contacts, and bookmarks, now they are synced at the time they are changed, both fetching and sending changes.

Yeah, totally, I agree. I just wanted top point it out cuz 15 mins is a minor annoyance, 1 hour is a LOT further from "push".

Note, for everyone, you MUST have a Mac with 10.5.6 and you must have your MobileMe preferences set to sync "automatically".
