MobileMe reaction to restored iphone 3g?

Hi guys and gals. I have just been to the Apple store in the area and asked this question without any useable response,so thought you might be able to help.

My iphone continues to crash and have to be put into restore mode, where all data is lost and the firmware restored.

Now thats ok if I am at home with the PC that is sync'd with the phone and has outlook contacts on that system. However, I travel alot, thankfully have a usb charge cable with me so can use any itunes to restore the phone from its frequent Apple logo system hang. Problem is with that situation my outlook is not it with and I cant get my contacts until I am home, rendering the phone kinda useless for me contacting people.

So I was thinking if I got MobileMe (though kinda resent paying for something to make the phone reliable) I could resync over any wifi connection with my MobileMe cloud of info.

But, the guys in the Apple store said they were unsure how MobileMe would react to a restored phone and might not sync my data.

So my question is, does anyone have any experience of this situation , restored the phone without their pc/mac *main one* and used MobileMe as their data sync.

What gets me is the inability to sync contact data and photos/sms with more than one machine. Why? Because of the above situation, if I am abroad for two weeks I am up a certain creek without a paddle. I can understand not syncing music /video with more than one machine *copyrights etc* but my own tel nos and email data, tis silly me thinks...

Anyway, any help much appreciated

I agree with this 100%. If you're having that many problems, you got a lemon and should get Apple to replace it.

As for the MobileMe question, it should sync up just fine after a restore because you will set up your MobileMe account on it just like you did the first time.

cheers for the quick replies guys. yeah think i will take it back to Apple and get another. I did buy it from Carphonewarehouse in the Uk but will Apple replace it ?? even though wasnt an Apple purchase?

You should call AppleCare and ask, chances are that you'll have to send it back to carphonewarehouse.

I don't know if they have different policies in the UK than they do in the US, but over here an Apple product is an Apple product. If you have problems with it, they honor the warranty regardless of where you bought it. I would try an Apple Store first (if possible) and Carphonewarehouse after that. In fact, I would try calling Apple before I ever tried the third party vendor, but that's just me.

I bought my iPhone from CarPhoneWarehouse and they specifically said when I was buying it, any problems you need to contact Apple, they dont want to know.

I dont have experience of what they are like if you actually take it back, I had a similar situation with Currys (different product), they said you had to go to the manufacturer, although kicking up a fuss and they exchanged my faulty good.

If you have an Apple store near by, this is your best bet

FWIW, the day I bought my iPhone (launch day), I was able to type in my MobileMe info on the iPhone and it synced my calendars, contacts and email to my iPhone right away.

Got my iPhone replaced about a week later (it stopped vibrating). Typed in my MobileMe info and it replicated everything (calendar, contacts, email) perfectly and without any issue.

In both cases, it was great to have the contacts without having to sync. I remember very few phone numbers, so I'm lost without my contacts!

I just wish Apple would back up the iPhone settings via MobileMe, like BlackBerrys do with a BES. (i.e. my favorites, etc)

Thanks for the info aristobrat, appreciate it. Had looked at the MobileMe route and might do that eventually. will see how the replacement phone goes. Shame it does store you favorites though.. But end of the day I just need my contacts back asap when the phone dies... Cheers all.
