A couple times since I've been syncing contacts with MobileMe, my custom ringtones for certain individuals have reset themselves. I think I've figured out that it happens when I change several contacts at once on me.com, which I guess causes MobileMe to push all my contacts to my iPhone, thereby overriding the individual ringtones.

Has anyone heard of this? Is it MobileMe or something else?

I constantly have to reset mine, they work for a while... then quit. - I finally gave up. yet another unfulfilled promise at this point...

me too! it really is quite frustrating. A few times I've gone to make a call, I open the Contacts app, and see that it says "No Contacts" and the little network activity thing is spinning, and within a few seconds they reappear, at which point my ringtones disappear. Really, really annoying.

Lost ringtones

I want to have my 2 cents worth too!

We pay good money for MobileMe & for ringtones purchased from itunes store only to have them not able to be used after 15 minutes, when MobileMe syncs and takes us back to the default ringtone.
Surely the tech guys can work out how to include the ringtones in the contacts so that they can be synced as well? Otherwise my advice to everyone is don't waste your money buying ringtones - it's a wrought!
This is extremely frustrating. I also experience the problem when you go to check your contacts and they're all wiped. It's generally no more than 5 minutes before they appear again but this is just  not good enough.

Agreed. This is just plain wrong. Especially for those who have paid for 3rd party ringtone aps. It seems consistent throughout all applications. Contact ringtones just don't stick. Help!

Yes, this happens with me as well. I stopped the syncing with my contacts with Mobile Me for now.

If you sync contacts with Mobile Me it will reset your contacts ringtones. This is due to Mobile Me not knowing (along with addressbook.app) or saving the ringtone information for each user.

I seem to recall it being a known bug where the only fix is to not sync contacts over the air with mobile me. Which is a crappy fix...

Just got done arguing with a Mobile Me "specialist" over the net, he explains that maintaining a custom ringtone with your contacts is NOT a feature of MM.

Article to "explain" and make sure you are aware of the lack of support.

As far as I know, you have to set/reset ringtones individually, unless you want to reset everything, or you can just sync your contacts with MobileMe, which will automatically reset all the ringtones, as mentioned above.

As for creating ringtones, try this link. It's a pretty good resource.

Just noticed this weekend that the 10.5.6 update seems to have fixed the reseting ringtones issue for me. Anyone still having problems?

Revising this thread, because I just got MobileMe and was looking for a fix.

I'm still on Tiger (until my new MBP comes in a few days, YAY!), but I just activated my MM, and I'm experiencing the resetting ringtones now. I guess I'll turn off contact syncing until I'm on the new computer.

Can anyone confirm that it's fixed in Leopard? Meaning, the ringtones stay as you set them?

I'm not going to swear that the issue is completely gone, but I haven't had my ringtones disappear since January.

My issue is that every time I add custom ringtones to my contacts via my iPhone, I get a message on my computers telling me I need to replace my contact data for MobileMe.

I've searched the forums to no avail, looks like I'll have to contact Apple.

I've noticed that occasionally my contacts' pictures change themselves from full-screen to square (not the little square in the corner) like they've been cropped to fit into the square box in the Address Book on my Mac.

Annoying.
