MobileMe vs Mac Applications

I had a look and I couldnt see anything similar

If we ignore the bugs/issues at the moment, Does http://www.me.com offer any benefits when I am sitting at my Mac over using the apps (Mail, iCal, Address Book)

For me the apps seem so much easier to use but I am wondering if I am missing something

Is me.com mainly for use when away from you mac

They do exactly the same. Benefit of the Mac applications is they are available at the click of a button, rather than having to access them through Safari.

You can think of MobileMe as a way to extend the information contained on one Mac over multiple devices. If you have two (or more) Macs and an iPhone, MobileMe will make it so you can always access your calendar and contacts without ever having to resort to using the web interface, and if you add a contact (or change someone's information) on one machine, it updates them all.

Then you also have your iDisk and Photo Gallery, so you can share files and pictures with other people more easily.

Hi Paul, I think you know me from somewhere else!

Really, the only benefit of the web apps in the situation that you describe is that it lets you see a lot of data in one place. You could also jump straight to me.com if you left it open in a tab.

The only benefit of the web interface is that you can access your information from any computer. If you're away from home and without a laptop or iphone of your own, it can be very useful to be able to log on to a website from any computer and access your email, contacts, and calendar. If you're always working at your own computer then I don't see any reason why you'd want to use the web interface, especially since the me.com web interface has quite a bit less functionality than the desktop apps.

For some, MobileMe it is very useful... For many, MobileMe is much ado about nothing...

Using your apps locally (on your Mac) versus on the web (or cloud) is always going to be a better and "more secure" experience. If you use a computer -other than your own- you expose yourself and your data, to others unless you know what your doing...

For me, it is useful to keep my devices (3-Mac's and an iPhone) in sync with the added benefit of being able to access my content when I am without one of my devices (which is never, unless I am on a vacation from my devices in which case I don't want to

Don't be fooled... "The Cloud" certainly is a nice word for the sometimes "ugly place" we call the internet...

cheers for the replies, I have my mac at home and use my iPhone when out and about, looks like I can ignore me.com unless I need to look at billing/account info.
So much talk of me.com, thought I was missing something

There are some features you can access via the apps on your Mac that are not implemented currently on MobileMe. For instance, you can't add other attendees.

The Mac desktop apps have more functionality. Apple's Mail app has smart mailboxes, more powerful signature options, more options for rules, stationary, more options for managing junk mail and spam plus your mail gets downloaded to your computer, if MM goes away you still have your mail.

iCal is pretty close to the web interface accept iCal integrates with Mail. In Mail you can click hyperlinks that allow you to set up appointments with iCal.

iPhoto has a lot more photo management and editing features than the web app.
iDisk can be set up as a local drive on your desktop so if you are not connected to the internet you still have access to your online files.

It's still better to use the desktop apps if you have a Mac because your work stays downloaded to your hard drive. Everything goes away if your MM subscription is cancelled.
