Just seen an icon in my Prefs, no idea where it came from and I don't want it...

It is called MobileMe and it is in prefs - Internet & Network.

It used to be .Mac. If you don't use MobileMe then you'll never need it. As for getting rid of it, you can't any more than you could get rid of Keyboard Preferences.

It's been there since MobileMe was introduced. And before that, it was .Mac
