Well I got the idea from another member on here. Wasn't too fond of the tan color, so decided to stain my cover. I simply took some olive oil and just rubbed it in with a sponge. Did 2 coats, and allowed it to bake/dry in the sun for about 4-5 hours.

Came out looking great --

I also added a couple of coats of leather guard, water-repellent. Adds a drop of gloss and makes the water bead right off :)

Just my thought - Might want to try tung oil instead of a food oil.

EDIT: I mention this because I imagine if I rubbed a food oil into my Smartcover and left it laying around where one of the dogs could get to it, they'd eat it, no matter how long I let it bake in the sun. :)

Neat! My biggest gripe with the smart cover colors is that theyre all so bright (except for black) and make the iPad look like a toy. That color is very close to what but from the pictures it looks more like it's dirty than it's stained. Is there a better material to use to make it darker and more even?

It looks just like my old brown leather jacket

So rubbing a little oil on something is classified as a "mod".

I suspect that will smell rancid inside of a week or two.

This makes me want to mod my leaver navy blue cover, hmmmm what what changes could be done without making it look black.

Olive oil will go rancid and will probably smell. You should use baseball glove oil instead. Nokona glove conditioner is a good product for about $5.

Sun tan oil would also be a better alternative (if you like pina coladas)

Wow, this is a great idea! I am going to try and use the leather shoe shine on my black case just to see if I can get a gloss look!
