Hi I am trying to buy a replacement battery for my G4 Powerbook, and retailers keep asking me what model number my machine is. One guy said they usually start with an M ie M870 etc......How do I find this out??

My old battery is an A1060, but cant find how to replace it.

Cheers

Take your battery out and look inside the bay. It should be on a sticker inside the bay.

Does System Profiler also provide this info? I'm at work on a PC, so I cannot check right now :(

Thanks for the swift reply. I have looked at the sticker but it doesnt supply a model number just a serial number beginning with UV3398 etc. ...nothing beginning with M ?????

You can get the information (and the battery, if you want) from OWC. They let you pick a battery by specs instead of model numbers, but they also have compatibility charts that link to archived Apple tech spec pages that include the model numbers.

Just checked my desktop Mac. System profiler shows the model number.
As an example here is my desktop computer:

Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
Machine Model: PowerMac3,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 832 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Sales Order Number: M7641LL/A

FYI, my System Profiler does not give my serial and model numbers.
