I don't like the semi-transparent background in the subtitles. It distracts me from the movie.

For some reason, even in the Mac, playing with Quicktime, or in my iPad, the subtitles pears with this semi-transparent box behind them.

Is there a way to disable this background?

No.

There is only this viewing option. The only thing you can do is to turn them off.

I´d also like to see a different subtitle view.

Yes, there is another option

Actually there is another subtitle format which I found out accidentally. It isn't supported for all shows on Netflix but it will work for most shows.

Make sure you turn off the subtitle setting from Apple TV's menu before you do anything.

When viewing an episode click and hold the "select" button on the remote until the subtitle menu shows up. Choose English and click select again. Voila!
I believe this subtitle option is embedded in the episodes itself. The only downside is you have to do this everytime you view a different episode. I was watching White Collars on Netflix when I found out about this.

You can also click up button twice to bring up the info window while viewing the episode. Clicking down button will turn the scroll bar into small chapters for an alternative fast forwarding.

I'll try this later. Does it only work for Netflix?

I am not sure if it only works with Netflix or not although I tried to use it with itunes purchased Law & Order SVU episode and didn't work. I haven't tried this with enough shows to be 100% certain. I have discovered it only a week ago. Sorry.
