MP 1,1-5,1 Mojave 10.14.3 running with 5770 - update to 10.14.5?

I recently bought a base 2009 4,1 (2.66 4 core, 6 GB RAM, GT120, etc.). I've updated the firmware to 5,1, and updated the OS to 10.13.6 on the drive that came with it. Once that was done, I replaced the drive that it came with with a 2 TB WD Black that had Mojave (10.14.3) installed on it. And Mojave is running with the 5770, which I did not expect.

How/why is it working? Is the Mojave requirement of a Metal capable GPU only for installation?

And should I update it to 10.14.5?

(I've been through a good chunk of the relevant Mojave thread by @tsialex though admittedly not all of it.)

It’s showing the screen, but it’s unaccelerated and no programs that require METAL work. So, you can use you HD 5770 for debugging purposes and some emergency usage, but it’s not a working configuration and everything seems to be over molasses.

For people that use basically 2D, the slow UI may be acceptable. Anything that requires acceleration is another story.

The prime example of acceleration is Launchpad and all the little animations OSX uses. I have no problem with that. And yes, I know FCPX et. al. are another story and exactly that was nothing, I was talking about.
For me, the UI is fast and responsive.
EDIT: I should add, I'm on 10.14.5.

I’m impressed that anyone finds HD5770 is acceptable at anything in Mojave except as a diagnostic tool. I have an Apple HD5870 which I’ve heard is faster than the 5770, and for me, it’s totally unacceptable.

I do have an HD7970 (MVC Flashed) that has all pre-boot screens and acceptable Mojave performance.

Don’t get me wrong, I only use the 5770 until I get the RX480 running, but it‘s not „molasses“

Oh, I would not say performance is acceptable - I’m just surprised it works at all, as Apple says a Metal capable GPU is required (though I do note it says for installation).
