  1. Using Mojave 14.xx.xx everything worked fine with a WD PR4100 and files stored! Then upgrade to Catalina 10.15.5 now folder are locked with permission denied ""ITs now a who said what"" - WD or Apple tech support battle...I'm in the middle and just want to see files. I've tried:
  2. Change of permissions to affected folders - no change
  3. Tried another logon to a new user with ADMIN capability (logged out the current user and made new user) no effect
  4. One folder does work of 8 folders affected? ODD, cant repeat the permission to match affected folders
  5. can't move bad folders to another drive (you do not have permission allowed) to open the folder or even copy it (permissions issues)
  6. TRIED using My Cloud (can see files on NAS box) not lost, just not wishful viewing - have to get back to the old viewing of folders on the desktop ...a MUST goal !
  7. Tried WD dashboard option and login with password on to My Cloud NAS box CAN SEE files nothing lost?
  8. Who next to call - Apple seems ? on WD support/firmware and products...WD suggests its Apple and file sharing issues
  9. Honestly, it worked fine in Mojave 10.14.xx ...upgrade was necessary AND do not want to go backward in OS's and reinstall 10.14.xx
  10. Check WD support page not much specific to my problem - - the NAS (ip controlled) DRIVE is mappable
phone call # 25 to WD or Apple or? till ? freezes over??

One major change between Mojave and Catalina is that your boot volume is split into two volumes, "controlled" by SIP.
Your system volume (example: Macintosh HD) is read-only.
Your other volume (example: Macintosh HD - Data) is for your data, and is read/write.
If you disable SIP, does that allow you to do what you need?

YES firmware is up to date according to WD

the WD PR4100 is a NAS attached HD, and not part of the iMac HD
not sure where SIP is or what it does- sorry
iMac unit is independent of NAS device, anyone could see with permission the NAS unit

Are you using SMB to connect to the NAS? If you are that might be the issue as Catalina uses SMB 3, Mojave uses SMB 1.

Here is an old thread where someone had a similar issue as you are having with a different NAS, maybe it will help you: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-problem.1961420/?post=22677646#post-22677646

Thank you all for feedback on NAS boxes and connection tips and Mojave versus Catalina concerns

This insight gave me the ANSWER to fix my concerns...
trying the different connection prefixes one gave me the answer - cifs:\\

IT works for the MOMENT

not sure why it versus MD default answer of smb:\\ or afp:\\ or other concoctions of prefixes would change permissions to files...IT WORKS (more inquisitive research may be involved - why fix a broken command) !

Have tried it for several days, copied files and moved files - ALL working

no more calls to Apple or Western Digital involving permissions or Catalina on Mac OS 10.15.5 and external NAS boxes

A thankful new Macrumors users

Catalina uses by default SMB 3. From what I gather using cifs: forces the use of SMB 1.
