You got (not directly bought) a licence for that Mac mini and not for the PowerBook, that's why. If you buy a retail version, you can install it on any one machine of your choice.

i disagree. and i did "buy" it. it came with my mac mini, that i "bought" with my hard earned money. therefore it's mine, and i feel that i should be able to put it on another one of "my" computers. now it's a different story if i give it to everyone i know and ask $5 for it

These days, licences tend to be per-computer instead of per-user. Therefore, you'll need to remove it from your Mini before you're allowed to install it on your PowerBook.

but how would it know that i took it off my mini? it seems to me there is no way

i put in the disk that came with my mini. i click on "install bundled software only". then i click continue. when it goes to the screen where you selected the volume to install to, i click my hard-drive and then i get a thing saying "you cannot install bundled software on this computer" or something like that.

It's not terribly complicated. The software restore CDs that come with a given Mac only work for that model. You can't take the software restore disks from a Mac mini and use them on an iBook. This is to prevent people from doing what you're trying to do. You may be able to use Pacifist to extract the Quicken installer from the installer package on the restore CD and then transfer that over to your PowerBook.
