UK - up North!
I have an issue controlling the brightness on my Apple 27" LED Cinema display, both with the keyboard and Desktop Sys Pref, after updating my 4.1 to 5.1 (El Capitan to High Sierra 10.13.6)

I seems like I have 2 monitor brightness controllers (Pref panes??) installed which clash with each other leaving any brightness control options (including auto brightness) not working about 2 minutes after Boot up.

Any help much appreciated!

Your screenshots are mixing and conflating audio controls with monitor/brightness. Are these also linked in control?

Overall, this looks like it might be a key mapping issue. Are you using an Apple Keyboard? Get a wired USB Apple keyboard with the number key on the side to see if it fixes your issues at all. This is native control and issued at the same time both the MP5,1 & ACD were issued, they're supposed to work in tandem.

Nearly EVERYONE with a MP5,1 & 27" ACD has both LED Cinema Display and Display Audio as available outputs after one of the BootROM updates because HDMI audio was reenabled. ACD connects via mDP and almost everyone hooks the USB's up to the machine.

If you have a blank/spare SATA HDD or SDD, I'd suggest installing a clean copy of High Sierra or Mojave on it and see if it clears any of your issues. You can also try creating a new user account and boot into that to see if it's a pref/settings issue.

Do you have the USB cable from the display connected directly to the computer?
The audio listings you're showing for the display have nothing to do with your brightness settings.

Thanks for the replies !!

I included all the screenshots so you had the information I was seeing, to check it was correct. I find it odd/confusing that the Menu Bar audio control/vol has 2 output options for 1 monitor.

Yes I have the full Apple keyboard USB'd direct to the comp (always have). What is odd is the comp doesn't recognise the keyboard (pic).

I've updated my Logitech BT mouse unifying software today to see if that makes a difference, there may as you say bsbeamer have been a kb mapping issue form it??

fingers crossed.

Which USB port is your Apple Keyboard plugged into ? I usually ignore that Keyboard identifier App and my genuine Apple USB Keyboard works OK.

timd123

Try shutting down, connect to another USB port ( for testing ) do a PRAM re-set THREE TIMES CONSECUTIVELY =3 "Happy mac chimes " and after you login ignore the Keyboard Identifier.

Check in "About This Mac" / USB to see if your keyboard is listed.

Open Text Edit and see if your keyboard is working.

Good Luck !

I have never used this particular display. Do you have access to a display calibration device? That is the right way to do this. On most modern displays you can then select an option either known as ADC or DDC in the calibration software that automatically sets the right brightness for you.
