I left on a vacation for three weeks. Came back last night got back to work this morning but my monitor display is broken. All I get ate vertical lines and colors. It’s a Samsung curved display I got at Fry’s 5 years ago. It’s for my 2019 7,1 Mac Pro. I do music and occasional video work. The $5k for the recommended Pro Display XDR is a little rich. I’m expanding my studio so I might be able to swing it, MAYBE. But what recommendations are there in macrumors land for me - quick - and my 7.1 Mac Pro. I didn’t need this this morning. Hopefully the Apple Store will have something in stock. Best Buy is also close. Thank you in advance.

have you checked the monitor with another computer or even try another cable?

the symptoms you describe sound more like graphics card fault.

Ok. I do have two computers hooked up. The 7,1 and a 5,1 Mac Pro. I have alternatively unplugged the HDMI cables. Even with both Macs off I get this.

Every 10th try or so the screen clears up. I switched the cables a lot between the two. Back and forth, not using a fresh cable. Both worked well for years on both Mac Pros. I merely shutdown the Macs and the Samsung monitor. First i only got HDMI 2 (Mac5,1). But I got 7,1 to come back. I don’t know whether it’s just because the monitor was COLD for three weeks or whether this is a more serious stability issue. My wife OKed buying the expensive Mac Pro display, but if this is stable I’m fine. I like the curve. Lol.

Another possibility is oxidisation on metal contacts, so try a new cable.

If that doesn’t fix it then enjoy your new monitor!

Try a new cable first, and give the ports on both the computer and the monitor a good blow (to get any dust out).

If that fails, I can highly recommend the new "5K x 2K" 40" ultrawide panel that's been put into the:

Lenovo P40W-20
LG 40WP95C-W
Dell U4021QW

They all have the same panel, so the image will be the same, just slightly different feature-sets on each of them. I picked the Lenovo (because I could get the best deal on it at the time) and I'm really enjoying it. It's replaced the 32"4k Asus Proart + 21" 2nd monitor I had before. And the high resolution means that (with scaling) you get really sharp, clear legible text. The colour accuracy is excellent too.

It's basically a wider version of a 4k 32" display.

FAR cheaper than the Apple display, and (for my money) a more useful form-factor and screen size.

Highly recommend the Apple Studio Displays, my eyes hurt less by getting these monitors.

I had 4k LG monitors before this and they are all matte, around $500 or less each, but my eye strain is gone and the Studio Displays are underrated as panels. $2k seems a lot but you can finance it with the Apple card with 0 interest.

The Studio Display is nice, but the panel isn't very great. It covers about 85.2% Adobe RGB. This 4K monitor from Lenovo has a better panel and it costs less. It covers 99.5% Adobe RGB. I have a couple of them.

Tech specs aren't always everything.

The Apple display is calibrated by Apple and it will be a very close match to every other device they have—even the LED panels on the 14/16" M1 MacBooks.

Unless you're doing super color accurate work, it doesn't matter.

I've been doing professional grade work for the last 15 years and used even crappier displays and had no issues. I stopped using Apple displays in 2015 when my dual Thunderbolt 27" ACDs started yellowing out. I'm glad Apple made new displays that aren't as expensive as the XDR.

The glass panel on the Studio Display actually helps balance things out and its easier on the eyes than any other display out there that has a matte coating. Also its 5k vs the 4k display you posted.

Would I have appreciated if Apple made a LED panel for $2k? Yes, but I don't think thats possible due to how expensive LED panels are usually at these sizes. Could Apple use a better/more accurate IPS panel? Sure. But here we are.

I also use the built in camera and mic now with Zoom/Meets now more often for meetings and ditched the Razer camera and Shure mic I had on my desk. Less clutter. And sometimes the built in speakers, but I have KEF LS50WIIs on my desk anyway.

Well damn. I left for three days, turned off the two Macs but left the monitor on. Same problem. Just dark colors. I can make out in back of it the Mac screen saver. Looks like after an hour maybe it’s warming up. I might have to get that apple display for Christmas. Argh.

BTW it doesn’t seem related to the hdmi cables. With both unplugged there’s no change.

I run (3) 27" monitors on my 7,1. A few weeks ago I swapped out the center NEC for an ASD and it has been great. I have always used NECs over the years because of their broad Adobe RGB gamut, but sadly I have to face the fact that more and more of the content I sell ends up on "screen" devices vs "print", so the expanded P3 gamut of the ASD works perfect for that. I still have my right and left monitors calibrated for print and so far I have not had any files that show that much of a shift (to my eyes), although I can crank up the brightness on the ASD when I prefer it.
