Monitor For digital photography

What monitor would be the best as an entry level monitor for digital photography. I am not talking about the cheapest LCD on the market, I am just getting into real photography (just got a 7d an huge upgrade from my digital rebel xt) and when I hooked up my current LCD to my mac book pro there was no way to get the colors between the two displays to match. Its my wife's old LCD and it just doesn't cut it. I am not looking for anything huge. 17"-19" maybe around $200-$400 for the monitor. And am looking for any recommendations.

You should definitely get a monitor color calibrator before anything else. Look into Colorvisions's spyder 2 or spyder pro 3.

I have a Pantone (entry level). Does the Spyder make a big difference?

Never used the Pantone. In the case of the Spyder, the Syper2 Express does not handle my wide gamut Dell 3008WFP properly. The resulting calibration was too warm, and the Express software does not support using the RGB controls my monitor has. With the Spyder3 Pro I got a white point of 6512K (i.e. 1/5 of 1% off). It looks much better than before.

The Pantone Huey is absolutely trash, it left a pink cast on my screens. If you search online it is a pretty big problem. I got a replacement but the same thing happened. Purchase the spyder pro in the end.

I have my Spyder3 Pro. It is awesome and supports the RGB color controls on my Dell 3008WFP. I have my monitor calibrated to 6524K white point, which is a fraction of a percent within ideal.
