Monitor frequently shows blank blue screen

I have a Mac Mini connected to an LG monitor via hdmi. The monitor has started to display a blue screen every now and then. It only stays blue for a second or so but is very annoying. Does anybody know what causes this ?

First make sure you've installed all the updates for your Mini; if it's a 2012 model there was a firmware update that addressed HDMI issues:

Other than that, try a different cable. I've had poor luck with cheap HDMI cables, get a good brand (e.g. Belkin).

Thanks for that but it seems this update is for the latest Mac mini, mine is the older one and when I try to install this update it tells me it is not compatible. I will try replacing the cable instead.
