For the last few years I have been trying to identify why the wi-fi signal in my office constantly drops out. I have finally figured out that my Dell UltraSharp U2414H monitor is the culprit. It is connected to my Mac using an HDMI cable plugged in to a USB-C hub (I have a 2016 MBP so no HDMI ports.) Before you begin blaming the MBP, the same happened to my old 2011 MBA (which in fact is one of the reasons I bought a new Mac, I thought the wi-fi card in my MBA was failing.) That was connected via a DisplayPort cable. I believe both DP and HDMI can carry an Ethernet connection, so I thought that might be causing the problem. However in Network Preferences (running High Sierra) I have disabled all network connections apart from wi-fi, but no improvement. The only way to get a reliable wi-fi connection is to physically disconnect the Dell monitor.

Can anybody explain why this might be happening? Am I going to have to get rid of this monitor, or is there anything else I can try to get it to play nicely with my Mac's wi-fi?

Probably worth mentioning that it only affects computers connected to the monitor. During the drop outs, which last a minute or so, my iPhone and other 'mobile' devices such as a Nintendo Switch connect and work just fine. This is driving me nuts!

That's strange. I suspect there's interference coming from the monitor and its radiating from the display cable. I have never heard of this but it is the only thing I can think of

I've tried different cables (DisplayPort and HDMI) but both give the same results. Unfortunately the monitor doesn't have VGA input so I can't try an analogue signal to see if that helps.

Changing the cables will not help if the monitor is radiating a signal down them. Have you tried using the monitor in a different room?

That's interesting. The Dell monitor does have a built in USB 3 hub, but I am currently not using it. I'm not sure if it could still interfere if only connected to my MBP by HDMI?
