mono proc MP 3.1 to duo proc ?

Hi all

(sorry if the question was already asked
i tried a search but couldnt find any)

my friend has a MacPro 3.1 mono processor
i've been upgrading MacPro 1.1 to 2x QuadCore

would it be possible to upgrade a mono processor machine to a duo processors ?
i know he ll need to buy an extra heatsink & a second processor

but will the mac start up normally ? no bios/firmware needed ?

he uses his mac for web development & image processing
no video editing nor sound mixing
will it be a faster machine since only Photoshop is using multiprocessing tasks ?
