I've been multitasking with several screen-hogging programs recently and have come to the conclusion that I need a large monitor to fit lots of stuff I'm working on. It doesn't need to be a great graphics monitor as it's for the office. For photography I'll be picking up an NEC or Dell when budget allows. Anyway, I found several likely candidates at Monoprice.com. I saw them discussed by Mac users on some other boards I later found and the comments were favorable. When I went to the site to look at the specs I was amazed to find a "not Mac compatible" warning (see below). Is this just because they don't want to support Macs or could there be a real hardware incompatibility?

Thanks for any insights.

---------from the Monoprice product page-----------
This monitor is equipped with a DVI-D Dual Link input ONLY. It REQUIRES a video card capable of producing a DVI-D DUAL LINK signal. If you are unsure of whether your system is compatible with this monitor or not, please contact Monoprice Technical Support for assistance.

This monitor is NOT Mac compatible!

I don't see any reason it would be not Mac compatible. A display is a display, and should work regardless of the OS used, as long as the proper hardware connection can be made. This should do the trick:

Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)

It worked on my 12' Mac mini with dual link DVi adapter from apple I got it on amazon for 50 bucks used but anyways I ended up returning it due to some sleep from wake issues and got another dell u2713hm

Thanks. Will probably pick one of these up.

What monitor did you use? I have seen other comments on the wake from sleep issue.

If you look in the customer reviews there a few people saying it works with Mac and a few that say it does not. There isn't enough information there to work with, but I suspect it is a display port or HDMI adapter problem.

I don't see why a dual-link DVI port wouldn't work. What video card do you have? You might not need an adapter at all.

On a different note, I just ordered a Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM this weekend for $550 shipped. The Monoprice monitors were not priced low enough to be a compelling alternative to me, but I know budgets can be really tight these days.

i might be able to shed some light on this topic. 2009 mac mini owner, and i purchased the 2nd version of the 27" monoprice monitor and it is shipping today. Here is what i have learned via web searching and talking to monoprice tech support.

The first version, with dual link DVI as the only input, is having problems with macs, especially after an update apple did around January of this year.

But the more recent 27" has multiple inputs...including dual link DVI, displayport 1.2 and HDMI. They are saying this monitor does not suffer from the problems of the first version. As long as your mac comes with native DVI, and display port.

Even though they are still suggesting the best connection for this monitor is MSP to dual link DVI, i ended up buying both cables...MDP to dual link, AND mini display port to display port, and i intend to try both. I also have a MDP to HDMI cable handy and will test this one and report back on wednesday when it arrives.

again i ordered this one and it shipped tonight for wednesday delivery.

That's a good price. I'll have to take another look at Dell monitors. The Monoprice is around $475 without shipping. I see what you mean about them not being a compelling buy; the difference including shipping will probably be around $50.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512 MB which was standard equipment with my 2009 Mac Pro. Should this be adequate for the new UHR(?) monitors? Photoshop, page layout, web pages are my applications. Maybe it's time for a beefier card but I hate to spring for one if I can get by with what I have. That's why I have a used Mac Pro. :)

Haven't found anywhere near that price for the U2713HM. Where did you get it? I hear Dell always has coupons out but finding one for a particular product is hard.

Newegg is running a memorial day sale for $585 (with promo code).

It was a Newegg sale + coupon (which has expired):

These types of things happen every month or two, however they only last a day or two at most.

At that website you can sign up for an email alert. I signed up for an alert on the phrase "ultrasharp" and waited for the exact model I wanted to go on sale. It worked perfectly.

Looking at the history by typing "ultrasharp" into that website's search bar I see I actually missed a sale at $504 for the same model a couple of months earlier.
