I just updated the m1 max to 12.1 and when i restart the mac the magsafe turns amber and stays like that even though it is 100% fully charged.

It seems to be that 12.1 does not fix all the magsafe issues.

Contacted apple and they asked me to get a replacement/refund. they suspect it is a hardware issue of an isolated case.

Any one having similar experience on 12.1?

That seems like unusual behavior. I have had the MagSafe issue when attaching MagSafe when the laptop is powered off it would flash amber light and beep each time. However I have never had an issue with the charging light not turning green when fully charged. It seems like a hardware issue to me. Good luck!!

It seems to be that the problem is happening when i am having the thunderbolt dock connected to the mac.

I have tried with ts3 plus and amazon dock and in both cases it is happening. I contacted caldigit about this and they told me that it is problem with apple and apple needs to fix it.

And also i tried one more anker dock and it is not happening in that.

Dont know who to blame apple or dock suppliers. i am stuck :(

You didn't say you were using a dock. I would try without the dock and see if you still have the same issue? If you don't have any MagSafe issue with just the laptop and no peripherals then you know it is not an issue with your laptop. Then try each peripheral separately. Then you should be able to isolate which dock is causing the problem or if all docks are having an issue then it is probably an issue with the docks. Are you sure they are compatible with M1 Macs?

I would try Apple support. Manufacturers of peripherals are never going to admit fault. They will either release a new dock fully compatible or a firmware update. If it is an Apple problem then Apple support should help. Then it is just a matter of when Apple releases an update.

Good Luck!!

I tried without the docks and the magsafe is ok. These docks are all compatible with m1 macs according to their website. With the docks i have amazon and caldigit ts3 plus has these magsafe issue. But anker dock does not have this issue. i have already contacted apple and it is really a cat and mouse game. i am tired of this already :(

Not saying it will work for anyone else but I had this exact issue and did an SMC reset and it fixed it for me. My battery was also charging on and off when the shell was closed and laptop was off and I plugged it in.

Again, certainly not saying it will work for your issues but corrected all my problems immediately.

What wattage is coming from the MagSafe? And what wattage is coming from the dock?

140 W from MagSafe which is the active one used by the mac. the dock provides 87W from caldigit ts3 plus and 60 W from Amazon dock which are not active. I have just connected only one dock at a time Since both the docks giving the same issue i am sending back the ts3 plus.

Thank you for the info. However this is not applicable for m1 macs. I have revived the firmware once and it did not fix the issue.

Interesting how that works. Is the battery optimized battery charging enabled? The one that sometimes stops charging if you plug it for a long time?

Yes optimized battery charging is enabled. The battery is fully charged and in the system reports it shows battery is not charging. But i have the magsafe amber and menu bar battery icon is lightning bolt and not the plug symbol.

Hmm and disabling the option doesn't fix it? If it doesn't it might be a bug . A different bug

Nope disabling the option does not help. What is buzzling me is that with the amber light when the system goes to sleep and when i wake it up it turns green. and also disconnecting and connecting the magsafe fixes the amber light. but the menu bar battery icon stays lightning bolt.

I don't have the issue... I went travelling for 4 days and been using magsafe while on the go and never had this happened to me even once.

It does indeed work on the M1. I have a brand new M1 Pro...again fixed it for me but maybe not for you. Can't hurt to try...

I mean smc reset is not available for m1 mac. we can only revive firmware in dfu mode as mentioned in the article. that i have already tried.

Are you using any thunderbolt docks with the mac?
Yep! I'm using a DELL TB3 and a TB3 and I'm charging mostly via it. Only when I'm one the go I use MagSafe. My main issue with the the thunderbolt docks was when I removed the thunderbolt cable from the Mac my screen aspect ratio on the laptop would change and would need to force a restart to fix it.
