Hello everyone! I'm new to macOS. Currently I have macOS Monterey 12.5 on the board "out of the box". Would you recommend me to update to 12.6? How stable it is? Does it have any crucial system issues, bugs, etc.? How the battery compared to the 12.5? Some say you should update regularly because of the security updates. But I have also read an opinion that no OS runs better on device than the version that comes with it "out of the box". Actually, I'm confused right now, because macOS Ventura will be released tomorrow. But this is a major system update, and I don't know if I should switch straight away to Ventura? As I said, I'm new to macOS and I don't know, how it works - will macOS 12.6 still be available for me after the release of macOS Ventura? Will there be another macOS 12 updates? Or it works like on an iPhone? Should I install every macOS update, for security reasons?

Update to 12.6 now, update to Ventura whenever you feel like it. Updates provide new features (in the earlier releases), security fixes and Bug fixes - all of these make your Mac better.

Once Venture is released, Monterey goes into maintenance mode and you only get Security fixes for 2 years.

But if I don’t update to 12.6 now, will it still be available after Ventura release? Or is it like with an iPhone - I will have only Ventura option on Monday? How stable is 12.6 version?

12.6 will be available to install for years to come and is fine to install right now.

Do upgrade Monterey, I expect Ventura will be the usual late Beta. Wait for about Ventura.1 and check all you less usual apps before upgrading to Ventura - something is bound to break – perhaps just a printer or peripheral, but could be something more important.

Thank you for your reply! So, does it mean that tomorrow I will have two options - 12.6 and 13.0 for download? I’m a little bit concerned about the update. I’ve read it has some system issues, and my current macOS is ok, I guess. Or there will be bug fixes anyway and I shouldn’t worry too much?

I always recommend installing dot and dot-dot updates; Like 12.x and 12.x.y when they are released. Updates like that will not push any drastic changes and will generally fix problems and improve security. They may add small features here and there, but are generally maintenance updates that solidify and improve the existing foundation and do not shift under you. Upgrading major versions like Monterey->Ventura you can consider more, and waiting a bit after release, checking app compatibility, etc. may be sensible depending on how much you value stability vs. new features.

12.6.1 will release tomorrow with security updates. You might as well wait for that one.

Do I have to turn off automatic downloads for updates if I don’t want to install Ventura yet and continue with Monterey for now?
