Issues at a live event this morning, for which I’m managing the presentation laptop and also filming the presenters. The Crestron projector would not lock on to either of the Mac laptops I brought, both running Monterey, one M1 Air via a reliable dongle, and one M1 14” Pro, failing with both built-in HDMI and the same dongle in the same way.

The projector saw the signal for a couple of seconds and then went black, while the linked TVs stayed locked on. The signal was getting through but the projector didn’t like it. I did disable ProMotion just in case.

A provided PC laptop worked, but several presenters are on Keynote, so that wasn’t an option. This projector worked from a Mac six months or so ago, but does anyone have any clues as to why this failed?

My solution was to run the laptop through my Atomos Ninja, which the projector could lock on to without problems. Still, if Monterey is less compatible with odd projectors than prior releases, we have a problem. Hopefully it’s just this one, but if anyone else can test with weird projectors they might have near, that’d be great.

Is this problem appearing for mirrored or extended Finder desktop? Did you try to change the resolution for the projector (?):

  • From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  • Click the Displays icon.
  • Press and hold the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display.
External display system preferences window with Resolution set to Scaled.

The event is long since past and I don't have access to that projector any more, but it was extended desktop at a very standard 1080p resolution. It's been suggested that it was an HDCP handshaking issue, and that could indeed be the case.
