My Monterey installer is quoting 4 hours and 49 minutes.

This isn't right surely? How long did it take for everyone else?

Mine is an M1 MacBook Air

About one hour in total from starting to down loading to being fully installed on my 2020 M1 mac mini. I had problems with the internet connection after that but it is all sorted now.

Not counting the download time which is obviously different depending on the connection.
30 mn preparing the upgrade in Big Sur before restart.
30 mn and several restarts before being able to login again.

MBP 2015.

It sounds like your install has stalled. When I have had the same problem I cancel out and start again in safe mode. This seems to work for me and I now use safe mode for all my system installs.

I did download from terminal and installed from there, took some hours 😄
Installing from systemsettings crashed ... so did it trying to get the img from appstore but crashed there too ...

I can install Windows 10 in under 10 minutes on an average PC. I sit there watching a M1 Mac taking forever to install Monterey (or any version, really). Fast CPU, fast SSD...what the heck is it doing?

I have the same experience. I guess the reason it takes so long is because Apple is more security focused than Microsoft so the install is just verifying things are installed properly?

I donno...it's odd how contrary these install times are between the 2 OS's...

Is that installing on a blank disk, or upgrading? Maybe that's what the difference is.
Does Apple have safeguards to keep the system functional even if the upgrade is interrupted? That might cost still more time.

If you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer, this can get in the way of system installs on an M1 Mac.

On my m1 2 hours
On my imac intel 45 minutes

Just updating from 12.0.1 to 12.1 was slow. Didn't time it.
As a Windows and Linux user it was quite shocking.

Why so slow?

I still love MacOS though. :) But this felt not quite "premium".
