Hello, I have a basic 2018 Intel MBP 13” 128gb SSD with macOS High Sierra, after installing Mojave in 2019 and wanting to upgrade to a newer macOS but short of SSD space I finally cleared out a load of stuff that left me with a capacity of 60GB so I went ahead & tried to install Monterey when I initiated the install it soon informed me it couldn’t continue with the install and I ended up getting stuck on the ‘checking null’ issue which got resolved by a forced restart only to find myself back with the original out of the box High Sierra macos. My question is can I upgrade to Monterey and if so can it be done in one install or do I have to get to Mojave & Catalina first? I realise this post was convoluted but I wanted to be as specific as possible & I would needless to say be so grateful for any input anyone would care to provide and thank you very much for reading.

Yep, you can go straight to Monterey! (Although I'm confused at how you ended up back on High Sierra if you'd already upgraded to Mojave).

I suspect it may have been something to do with the forced restart I committed to after being stuck/frozen on “checking null” it was infuriating.

A forced restart wouldn't do that... unless you started Internet Recovery to bring down the OS that was originally installed on the machine?

Funny you should mention that! If I remember rightly I’m sure I used the combo ‘Option+Shift+Command+R’ you’re obviously schooled in this, whereas I just as obviously am not and although I can’t remember what option/s I clicked on to get into such a mess, I reckon you nailed it by mentioning “internet recovery” it seems obvious now. Anyway thanks for the help it was badly needed.

Tbh if you're not upgrading due to security issues stay on Mojave , it's much more stable than monterey and no memory leak problems

Wish I had on my iMac late 2015....
