Read several threads and don't see this specific question answered.

Currently running:
- MP 5,1 (mid-2010)
- non-flashed Sapphire Rx-580 (installed a couple years ago)
- Mojave (10.14.6)

Went to the App Store and searched for Monterey.

On the install page, under Compatibility it says: "Works with this Mac Pro"

Does this mean I can install Monterey natively without having to follow the Open Core path?

No. Official support for MacPro5,1 ended with Mojave. Mac App Store is offering Monterey based on the Mac that OpenCore is spoofing (iMacPro or 2019 Mac Pro).

Ok thanks .. so just to confirm .. I don't have OpenCore, and Mac App Store telling me it's compatible is a bug?

You can't run anything newer than Mojave officially, even if Mac App Store someway offers it. If you are in doubt, just try and see for yourself.

Don't worry, I get the same message on a 5.1, even though it is false.
You will find other apps, will say the same thing, but when you click the pull down there is a minimum OS required.
