Today I’ve renewed a relative’s AC+ for them, as they tend to be accident prone and have no intention of upgrading to an Air 4 style mini should one arrive. The process was completed through the about menu. While there was sufficient Apple ID credit for several months’ premiums, it demanded a card payment. Now that the AC+ is set up, can I safely remove the card details from the Apple ID and simply keep it topped up for the monthly renewals to be taken from? I’m concerned about a clearing out of the account should relative accidentally make purchases now that a card is registered on the Apple ID. I would prefer to remove the card if at all possible, but am further concerned that the iPad doesn’t seem to be requiring the password for new apps, as this seems a must if the card can’t come off. Relative has a passcode (prefers this to Touch ID) but might well have forgotten the Apple ID password. Going to Apple ID > Media & Purchases > Password Settings, it displays the Always Require Passcode and Require After 15 Minutes options, but doesn’t allow me to select one.

In the absence of a new Mini being announced, or any decent refurb offerings on the base iPad that might be used as a stopgap if needs be, I also renewed my AC+. As I’m still on iPad OS 13, I was directed to renew via the browser and did so, paying via CC. The renewed coverage is now showing up in my about section, no problem there. I don’t have the CC in my Apple ID though, and am wondering if it will fail next month for that reason? (though both the CC and Apple ID have sufficient funds.)

I don’t want to assume I’m safe to take/leave the cards off and have the AC+ fail for that reason, as I understand that it can’t be reactivated if cancelled (which it would be in effect in that event.) Can anyone shed any light? Thanks

Why not open a debit card with minimal funds that you can easily track and use that for iTunes? Maybe Venmo or something? That way, you'll know right away and there's a backup in case the Apple ID runs out of funds.

Mind, I see the same thing in Apple ID > Media & Purchases > Password Settings but it's always required either TouchID/FaceID or password before purchase.

Not knowing the AppleID password is problematic so perhaps you can also reset it now or something while you still have access to a working device.

No concerns about being locked out of the device thankfully - I had kept a record of their Apple ID password so we have it if it’s ever needed and if indeed they have forgotten it.

In the UK most if not all debit cards attract a fee of some kind if you attempt to spend more than is in the account (either for blocking it or they allow an unathorised overdraft and you get the associated interest on that amount.) I do have one card that might not though - off to check my documents and I could maybe leave that on there for a month to see if they take the payments from the Apple ID next month. I will set reminders in calendar to top up the Apple ID if they will take the payments from there.

For my own AC+ I’ll just add my CC. Guess I’ll have bigger things to worry about than a card with a low limit being saved on there if my iPad’s ever lost or stolen.

My AC+ renewed today and was taken from the iTunes credit. I now have £1.11 so tried to add £2.38 to leave exactly enough in for the next payment, but it says payment couldn’t be completed and to contact Apple support.

I think I’ll try it again in a few days instead (it’s a different card I was trying to add from and I only added it this morning.) It wouldn’t have added the card to my Apple ID had I mistyped any of the details, would it?
