Not impressed with this. Throwing Apple News in my face which I don’t want.

Another nail in the coffin

Funnily enough, my weather app regularly surprises me with the news it reports.

Today it has an article about radio signals coming from under the antarctic, and the low angle of 30° suggests they've travelled through thousands of miles of rock which should be impossible with our current understanding of physics- the rock should absorb them.
They don't behave like any known particle and it's possible they may have stumbled on a new particle or even the first signs of dark matter.

Not bad for a weather app.

I was an RF engineer. This sounds like someone had a fanciful conclusion to a measurement system error.

If I want news I’ll look for news.

Next thing it’ll be news in my mail app because it’s contextually relevant…

Or, or, you know, maybe they show you multiple emails!?! If you want to look at several emails, you’ll open multiple mail apps! Yet another nail in the coffin!

Weather news in the weather app, imagine the audacity!

Well now I’m disappointed that I’m not seeing news in the Weather app 😩🤓

yeah i noticed that too… kinda annoying tbh. i just want quick weather info, not news articles shoved in there 😑
wish there was a way to toggle that off without diving deep into settings or blocking the whole widget.
feels like apple's slowly turning every app into an ad space for their services.

I don’t know. If it’s only used to broadcast stories that have something to do with the weather conditions and people’s destructive decisions because of it, maybe you SHOULD tell people that there is a severe fire risk and that they should abstain from certain activities.
There is a reason for this and it’s valid. The implementation however will hopefully be dialed in tastefully.

It's been reported in other sites
It does sound like a reflection or something similar, but these people aren't idiots.
It looks like it isn't new physics however.

It’s only when there’s weather news in your area

That's not correct. I've seen it a few times in my weather app, and and it was about weather on the west coast. I live in the Midwest, and have never seen local weather news.

I don't see them anymore, maybe because I deleted the News app?

I admit I don’t use the Weather app, but I checked and I don’t see it on my iPad 11th-gen (running iPadOS 18).

I agree though, it shouldn’t be there.

Perhaps because the news item is weather related?

Weather-related is apparently an expansive term. Earlier this week iOS 18's weather app inserted a "news" article in about "thousands" without power in NYC during the heat wave. Exactly what are they suggesting I do with this information? And, thousands out of an 8M city and 20M MSA? As in 0.01 to 0.1% of the people? Probably a daily occurrence in Houston but Fox has a trope about NYC falling apart.

I am sure others would be annoyed if traffic reports randomly included references to climate change or similar.

If it's not from the NWS or similar, it doesn't need to be in the weather app. When I want to be annoyed by news, I stop by the NYTimes and WSJ.

P.S.I guess this "feature" was introduced in iOS 16 but I only noticed it this week after finally letting go of my OGSE/iOS 15. If I wanted to be a target for "synergy" I would have switched to Android.
