Was trying out finding my AirTag which I’d left downstairs, I was in the my bedroom with the curtains closed and just some ambient light coming in. I opened the Find My app on my phone and it said that I need more light, why would I need more light to find a Bluetooth tracker?

When youre specifically using the precision tracking feature(as shown in your ss), it is not relying on Bluetooth its using the U1 ultra wide band chip instead.

Nope. If you're in a dark room this message pops up right after you start finding your AirTag, even when it's not yet at the Ultra-wide band signal range.

Its going to ask for more light even before you get in range, because when you get in range its going to ask for more light anyway when it switches To the UWB to precisely find it.
