more problems with boot camp disc error xp please HELP

Hi all

Installed leopard today every went fine UNTIL i tried to install xp via boot camp got past the stage were it says what formatt you want this was the last line bootcamp ntfs press enter it then seemed to be loading fine loading block yellow line moving across the screen got up to around 60% then stopped got a black screen disc error please press any key to re start had to force quit, tried booting up again got told no bootable cd in drive had to force quit again after getting xp disc to pop out i put leopard cd back in re installed and deleted the part made xp partition the xp disc i know works fine and has got sp2 on it can someone PLEASE HELP as i need xp and this is driving me nuts

Edit: thought id deleted xp partition but when i go in to disc utility and try to erase the xp partition boot camp it erases it for a second or two then it comes back at what looks like a folder on the left of the window

Edit 2: have managed to now delete xp partition but need help with the re install of windows ie disc error

You say you are certain that there is nothing wrong with the Windows XP install disc you're using but if it keeps crashing with a "disc error" at about the same point each time a defective disc is the first thing I would suspect.

Is it a factory-pressed installation CD from Microsoft? Even they can go bad. Have you very recently used it to install Windows on another machine? Do you see any obvious scratches or gouges on the data side of the disc?

hi thanks for reply yes its a legal copy and yes ive used it and no there are
no scratches and ive also cleaned it

Well, I wasn't implying that it was an illegal copy. I was really just trying to say that even commercially produced discs can develop problems.

Have you only tried installing it that once when it locked up at 60% with the disc error? I would try at least once more and see if it does this again and more importantly if it does so at exactly the same point in the install process which would really indicate to me a medium (e.g. disc defect) issue over any possible Boot Camp partition issues.

Did it just display "disc error" with a black screen or was there any more detailed information? You should write down exactly what is displayed when (and if) the machine locks up on install again. This would be very helpful in tracking down exactly what is causing the problem. How big have you made your Boot Camp partition by the way?

i have the same problem. but mine happens after it restarts the 1st time.

bootcamp beta version was better than this. i had 0 problems with it.

to solve this w/o much expertise needed:
1.downgrade to tiger, install windows with bootcamp beta in tiger.
2.upgrade to leopard and install the drivers.
Done. Takes a little while though.

hi and thanks but i thought apple stopped beta versions ive tried going on
google but i keep getting re directed to the leopard apple site and id also would like
the full version

I may be too groggy to understand this post but the disk error usually comes up when you install without reformatting the bootcamp partition during windows installation. The step by step bootcamp instructions are worth following. Hope this helps.

hi and thanks is there anyway of viewing the instructions as i dont have a pinter ive tried formatting to ntfs i got a disk error the first time it then re started i then told it to install on the previous partition which it did it got past the first shut down but then restarted from scratch

in bootcamp click help for the manual. You might try FAT32. I had a few problems with bootcamp and parallels bootcamp. Unless your partition is over 32Gb FAT32 has the advantage of read/write from Mac AND you can rename the partition to other than untitled.

NTFS worked for me and I was unaware that you could even install Windows at all without having properly formatted the Boot Camp partition. Then again, it's been quite a long while since I installed it.

Yes, you can read/write directly from OS X with FAT32 but in my case I am using VMWare Fusion to access my Boot Camp install of Vista and of course have full drag and drop read/write ability. I prefer NTFS no matter what the partition size.

Apple just stopped supporting the Boot Camp betas. Anyone can continue using them without official support from Apple for as long as they like. It might be hard to find a copy of the betas for download at this point though since Apple certainly isn't serving them. I recommend, like the above poster, that you just carefully follow the directions in the help file for the installation of the latest version.

many thanks for all your help i finally got xp installed i was trying to formatt the partition during the install but for some reason it didnt work anyway got
there in the end i formatted it ntfs and 32gigs maybe ill have to make this
larger but dont fancy going through all that again

so my next question is, is there away of making the partition larger without
having to do it through boot camp windows install

also mac ntfs by paragon looks good this allows osx to read/write ntfs
