Simple question really - I am about to max out my internal 4x4TB internal storage shortly as my FLAC collection alone is 2.5TB and two of the bays are backups of the others using Carbon Copy Cloner - I have a USB3 PCI card installed and wonder what you lot would think is the best / cheapest / most future proof way to continue is....answers in that order would be appreciated.....

Pcie m2 nvme or pcie ssd internally.
Personally I would have the active drives in the Mac, and the backups externally.

I have been offered a DS416j by a mate for 100 which looks enticing but probably a stupid newbie question - All I am looking for is using it as backup for my 4 internal drives on my cMP - Can I just clone drives straight across using USB3 or can it only be seen as one big drive or some form of RAID ?

Actually this is a no go after some more digging - I see an 8TB USB3 external drive (WD Elements) on offer today for 115 - I suppose I could partition it and that would allow me all 4 drives internally as "normal" drives rather than 2 back ups.

If you have an open 5.25” bay, it’s a good spot for a platter backup drive. Cheap 5.25 to 3.5 mount adapter and done.

As my previous post, I would recommend external for backups.
Just my paranoia, but let’s say your Mac was stolen, your backup is gone also.
