I was thinking about the size of the power adapter of the iBook and if they were to make it too thin than the power adapter would become bigger than the case and it would be awkward. So I think magsafe was more than just a way to prevent the laptop from flying off the desk when tripping on the cord. It would also be so that Apple could make their laptops even thinner.

I think he's saying the power-brick is the same thickness as the laptop. So they fit next to eachother well in bags and so forth.

I was talking about the part that actually connects to the laptop because it looks pretty thick and eventually with be bigger than the laptop so they would switch to the magsafe so that doesn't happen.

umm I think your really reading to much into the thickness of a power adapter here. the old style connector was out of date and needed a update, yes, it probably got thinner along the way as a result of the laptop getting thinner. But I don't think the thickness was high on the list of changes.

I imagine the process was more along the lines of "we're redesigning our laptops and a lot of people have had problems with their power adapter breaking off and such, we should probably look at them as well"

it's form following function

Also all the PowerBooks that got knocked off tables and died because their users used the small cable that wasn't long enough and they tripped over it...:(
