I just saw "The Road" and I really cannot think of another movie that was as heart wrenching and hopeless as this one...so I thought I would start a thread and ask:

What is your list of the saddest/depressing movies you have every seen?

Here is my list:
The Road
Irreversible
AI
Requiem for a Dream
Memento
Schindler's List

There's more I just can't think of them right now...but its a start.

Requiem for a Dream is also on my list, along with The Color Purple and Rapa Nui. Heck, Rudy also makes me cry every time, too, though it's not a depressing/sad movie overall.

Requiem for a Dream is way up on my list there. Difficult movie to watch, for sure, but brilliant nonetheless.

At least there was some redemption in Up, but man: the opening sequence was so beautiful and heartbreaking.

Yeah, Lars von Trier should be in the depressing movie hall of fame. Have to say I still love his Riget (The Kingdom) miniseries. Too bad Stephan King made such a butchery out of it when he tried to remake it for American TV.

BAMBI!!!!

I kid, I kid...

Salo (The 120 Days of Sodom) is disturbing and saddening. People are capable of such cruelty.

Saving Private Ryan
Finding Neverland
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Million Dollar Baby

not necessarily depressing but parts are sad or tearful.

Requiem for a Dream
Mysterious Skin
Simon Birch
The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys
Pay it Forward

And of course The Color Purple, I cry every time.

The Pursuit of Happiness with Will Smith. When his son dropped his Spiderman figure and had to leave it in the street that was a struggle for me. Great movie especially through the eyes of a father.
