**note: see the more recent posts. A rolling leader board has developed as opposed to my original concept (which was flawed). The rolling leader board produces the best summary of where the MMs stand and also hopefully gets some non-current models in there for comparison. The 'entrant number' idea is a moot point now. If you want to find a member's post to see their config then you'll just have to search the post. Sorry for the prescriptive nature of the post. To all the party-poopers this is just about a bit of fun and hopefully gets some comparisons going so members can see what they get for their dollar and how different the models are.**

ORIGINAL POST (albeit it was also edited early on slightly to account for the changing nature of the leader board)

I think it would be fun to see who has the most powerful Mac Minis in the forum. Even if you cannot better the score of the number 1, plzzz post so we can see the comparisons and individual results in some of the NovaBench categories (RAM, Harddrive test etc.etc.

I propose the following rules:

1. We use NovaBench for uniformity in scores (http://novabench.com). It's free and gives a clean simple to understand result.
2. Each poster must post an image of the result (not editable text postings). For those that don't know how to do this, use Command-Shift-4 to cut an image of a section of your desktop. You will see a cross hair to select a portion of your desktop. The image file should be saved on your desktop. Add it via the paper clip icon in your post (don;t forget to click 'upload')
3. Each poster sets out their configuration so we can see what config is producing the best results.
4. Each new poster must copy/paste the list at the end of their post so we can keep track of who is currently leading. I originally suggested a leader board approach (so this sentence has been edited) but I think it is easier simply to have a running list now. That way everyones result is up.
5. Play the competition in the right spirit. Many posters will be super technical with ways to doctor the results. I think the basic environment to run the test is in your normal operating mode with the simple allowances of unplugging all peripherals and quitting all apps.
6. You can 're-post' or re-enter the competition if you better your score, or alternately you may have more than one MM. On that point, you may want to run a few NovaBench tests as the result varies a touch.
7. I suggest we have an entrant number so if the post gets long and members want to see the config of the leaders they know roughly were they are in the thread.

I think it will be interesting to see some potential scores in:

-How the DIY fusions compare to the Apple ones
-How the fusion drives compare to pure SSDs
-The difference between the 2.3Ghz and 2.6Ghz Quads.
-Whether any of the old MMs can come close to the high end current models (that is, it will be likely some of the old 2011 2.0Ghz quad core servers will likely beat the current base models.
-Comparisons of RAM/Memory scores in NovaBench.

I should point out I am not doing this out of personal winning spirit in that I am certain my current 'number 1' status will be beaten in no time (due to my 'not top of the range' SSD). I am more interested to see comparisons and whether any particular mods or configs come out on top. I also want to see what the ultimate configuration is.

Before I get complainers about how Novabench does not cover this and does not cover that… well I am trying to keep it a bit simple to get max participation, so lets not complicate it, and enjoy the competition to see who is king of their category.

I will do the first post to give you and idea of what I am suggesting.

I hope this is not a fizzer because I would love to see comparisons.

Interesting the score is 834 in Nova bench. It was done about 12 months ago though.

I'll play for the fun :) (just for laughs I attach Alice's results too - my Air)

I think a simple 'add your score list' is the easiest way to set out the score. My original suggestion of a leader board is too complicated I think? That way any MM can be added. I have edited the original post to make it a simple running list now. Simply add your score and post your image.

Help me understand why this is even necessary? There are only 3 processor choices, same GPU, and only a couple ways of slightly increasing your disk score by using RAID0. It isn't like you can overclock, change GPU, add a second Proc, etc....

My thoughts exactly..

I agree there isn't much choice here. But the operative word for me anyways, is for a bit of fun.

why not indeed.

I usually frown on bench comparisons but I felt a bit of fun would be nice rather that putting someones happy-time down. I don't see a need for comparing what is an obvious hierarchy of performance in the range; but some folks do like this sort of thing.

As its just light fun; play or don't :)

Lol. It's not like people here are installing turbos and headers in their Mac Minis. I mean, the results are all going to be pretty much exactly the same across the different model ranges. No one person is going to have "the most powerful" mini. Everybody with the latest quad-core mini has the most powerful one :)

It was just meant to be an eye-catching muck-around title. Your comments are correct but somewhat obvious as well :) I guess there were a few more people here with stock minis than I thought. I was hoping to get some speed comparisons on Apple Fusions versus DIYs, 2.6Ghz versus 2.3Ghz CPUs, Corsair versus Crucial RAM, 1600Mhz versus 1333Mhz, SSD versus SSD etc.

The concept was a fizzer anyway. I had more complainers than entrants...

I think I'll stick to one-liner tips from now on.

Live and learn.

Hint: if you want the bench software for free, click the smaller "no apstore" link, otherwise you pay in personal data.

The GPU benchmark is not telling much. The Radeon 6630 in my mini wins by 40% from the Radeon 6670 in my hackintosh, probably because of the fast GDDR5 (the 6670 has 1Gb DDR3), yet the second is much faster with heavy modern shaders.

How do you select the hard drive?

Hello. I want to run this test with my mini 2012 I7 2.3. When i start the Novabench its says that my processor is 200Mhz?

Mac mini (Macmini6,2)
Intel Core i7 @ 2000 MHz
16 GB - DDR3 @ 1600 MHz
Intel HD Graphics 4000

When i check this in "about this computer it says 2.3

What is wrong?

Sounds like NovaBench has a fault.

What happens when you type the following in Terminal:

sysctl machdep.cpu.brand_string

For example my 2.6 says the following:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60GHz

You can also type the following:

sysctl hw.cpufrequency

I think the result in the last command is in Khz or hertz or something so it displays something like 2600000000 in mine which is 2.6Ghz.

Sorry I am not technically minded.

Either way, if Terminal brings up your correct speed and About This Mac also does the same it sounds like a NovaBench error.

Other members may have ideas on why it would report wrong.

Hello. Thanks for help=)

I have type sysctl hw.cpufrequency in terminal an it says

2300000000

I got 1050 in the test

Not that this is a technical way of confirming your CPU is working at 2.3Ghz, but your score is reasonably similar to the other 2.3Ghz CPUs that did the test which would be expected.

@borostef

How do you get that Radeon score?
Here is only delivers 76 points.
I think the OpenGL of Novabench is really flawed.
