Hey folks,

My dad is buying anew dell and doesn't need the monitor. Which would be the most suitable size/shape to accompany my 20" imac? I dont want to spend too much on getting above the 17" one, so the options would be the 19" standard or the 19" wide.

The imac is wide screen however its chin gives it more of a 4:3 shape. I think the 19" wide may sit lower than the imac screen too. Could always prop it up with books!

Any thoughts?

Actually the Dell can sit pretty high, I'd do the 19" wide. It's not the overall shape it's the screen real estate that you'd want to try and match.

hmm, I tried my flatmates 20" wide and it sat a good 2" lower than the top of the viewable area of my imac. We talking about the same ones? It has no height adjustment.

If you have and old CRT monitor take off the bottom swivel (it should pop or slip out) and place the LCD on that .Mine is about 2 inches high which is probably about standard.

Plus now i get an extra tilt forwards and back adjustment and side swivel.Mines black so it matches :D

You'd probably want the bottom of the screen to line up with the bottom of the display on the imac, not the bottom of the chin anyway...

Get the 19 inch widescreen and prop it up on books, use the aboves idea if you can (you could even buy a used or broken crt off craigs list or somehwere for free or all of like 10 bucks probably) If it is not already black... spray paint it.

If you don't have that option... get a shelf meant for proping up a monitor.. or better yet... get a block of wood that's teh exact height you need after measuring, get it cut at the hardware store (or do it yourself if you have access) sand and spray paint it to match the monitor (just for looks sake.. books will take away from the beauty that is the imac next to them... hehe)

goodluck!

The 22" LCD that Dell offers is awesome, and even though it has the same res as the 20", having the two extra inches is nice for playing videos and the like from Front Row.

TN PVA IPS 6bit 8bit.....????

Maybe a 20.1" Dell 2007WFP is a good choice. It uses the same panel as the Apple Cinema Display and is 8bit color (although the processor running the screen will be different). Cheaper monitors use 6bit TN panels and can't display 16.7m colors.
The 21" Samsung 215TW is also 8bit.
Do a search for TN , PVA and IPS panels. There is much more to monitors then the industrie tells us.

In the end I went for the 19" standard 4:3 one. mainly as its only costing me £23 :)

I think these sit at roughly the same overall height as the imac, so it suits it in that respect.
