Hey all,

Hopefully this hasn't been covered before... I did a search but couldn't uncover anything.

Is there a way to mount a folder on an external drive as a folder in a user's home directory? I know you can move your entire home folder, but I'm attempting to set one folder from a mirrored external RAID as my pictures folder and another folder from another drive as the movies directory. I've played with /etc/fstab in linux, but the syntax appears slightly different in the vifs file. Specifically, it seems to use the UUID of the drive rather than the /Volumes/DRIVE/FOLDER syntax, and I can't get the syntax for specifying a subfolder on the drive.

Any input from the wise members of the forum?

I did the same thing you want to do, keep ../pictures on an external. What I did was use a symbolic link in my home directory that points to a ../pictures on the external.

Mac OS X calls links "aliases" and you can make them in the finder but I just do an "ln -s" in the termnal

Yeah, I've used symbolic links in the past, but it can create issues with the mount if the drive dismounts improperly or is missing (ie where the drive reappears as "DRIVE 1" instead of DRIVE, it can mess up some program links). I was hoping for a manual mount solution, but may have to default to the ln-s route :-/
