So, like many, have installed mountain lion.

Looking at the istat widget, it says that there is a lot of incoming data.
Is there any way to see what is being downloaded by which app or the system?

I tried software update and updating my other applications but they all are up to date.
There is nothing open while it is doing this. The CPU seems to be doing quite a bit of work too.

Any help would be great!

Could it be iCloud doing syncing and stuff behind the scenes?

Also, open Activity Monitor, change to "All Processes" and sort by CPU to see what is using the most processes. That could reveal the culprit.

Also, could your system be indexing? My system was indexing and the icon didn't show it, so actually click on the Spotlight icon and look

i don't think it was iCloud. It did all that this morning, along with indexing.

The process that was sucking it all up was "kernel_task"?
Seems to have stopped now. Weird, was going for about an hour, then just nothing.
