Hello guys,

I recently got the Macbook Pro Retina and, like everyone, will be installing Mountain Lion when its out.

I wanted to do a fresh install and since MBP Retina does not come with iLife dvd in the box, is there anyway I can reinstall/download iLife apps without paying for them after clean installing Mountain Lion?

Check the App store now, see if they're in your installed purchases. If they are, you'll retain them.

You should get all the iLife apps for free via Mac App Store. Go to Purchases tab and click "Accept". Then you will get all 3 (iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand) under your Apple ID account :)

Hope it helps and good luck :D

Open up Mac App Store for the first time, and a message should pop up asking whether you wish to add iLife to your list of purchased apps. Say yes and the apps will then be listed as "paid for" in the store for you to download for free.

They will still be downloadable for free after your clean install.

If you go under the "Purchases" tab in the Mac App Store, you should see the iLife apps and be able to associate them with your account by entering you Apple ID. Them you will be able to redownload them after you erase and install Mountain Lion.

Although, I really doubt you need to go through all that trouble, since you just got the computer. Unless you're having some kind of odd problem with the OS already...

thanks guys.

It doesn't ask me to accept anything but those apps are under 'Purchases' and say 'Installed'. So I should be alright then?

ok so I did what you guys said. (BTW I'm on a new retina macbook) and no luck . I just installed ML clean install, and when I go to the App Store > Purchased > just the apps that I have downloaded in the past. No iLife!

You needed to do that BEFORE you clean installed. Try talking to apple.

Funny.. Apple doesn't account for the case where people are smart enough to know how to wipe their computer and clean install a new OS, but also stupid enough to not even sign in once to the App Store to retrieve their free versions of iLife products before doing so.

I remember seeing an iPhoto update in the mac app store on Lion, but nothing showed up in the Purchased screen. Nothing ever prompted me to register the iLife apps either, and yes, I had logged in with my apple id.

Seems odd, but anyway, Apple should make it right for you.

Einstein some of us did sign in before wiping are new machines. In fact downloaded updates for the iLife suite.... still no available downloads after clean install. All while using the same Apple ID...

So I have a similar situation and I didn't think it justified making a new thread. I sold my macbook air 2011 to my girlfriend. I did an install of Lion from the recovery and everything went fine. Used all of her information to sign into Lion and once everything was finished I went to the Mac App store to download iphoto, iMovie and GarageBand for her. It has "Accept" instead of download or buy and when I click accept using her AppleID and a warning pops up saying that it is registered to another AppleID. If I log into the Mac App Store with my AppleID I'm able to download it, which I did for the time being but I'm not exactly satisfied with that outcome. I did find something on appple's support page that I needed to unregister the computer from my AppleId and register it on her AppleId but that didn't work. Any other suggestions how to get a valid iLife suite on her computer? Purchasing Mountain Lion will not help that will it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iLife is already on it but I'm not sure that since it was downloaded with my AppleId that she will get updates. Downloading it from other sources won't really benefit me in this situation.

Just email Apple support and explain what happened. I had the same problem and they sent me redeem codes. They will ask you the S/N of the computer and some other info.

Any success Tburk32?

Hi tburk32,

I would like to update my MBP too but always get the prompt to login the AppleID of the person who have installed it.

Would like to check with you if you have any luck or updated remedy on this issue.

Thanks
