No its not "revolutionary" or anything, but its so much faster than Lion on my iMac (listed in sig). I originally did an upgrade and things were funky, so I did a clean install and MtnLion is blazing!

I hope the GM is the same build as the retail because I'd hate to install everything over.
 
Considering that Apple has not released a "GM 2" (something it has never done with OS X), the GM will be the final build.

How did you do a clean install? The copy I downloaded was way too big to fit on a DVD
 
I'm hoping NOT to have to do a clean install...Three Macs, and It will mean a days work moving data onto my R4 and back again. I'll do it if things grind though. Start with my iMac and go from there. If it does show an appreciable speed differential from a clean installation then so be it, but I really don't have the time to start afresh on all three at present.

Fingers firmly crossed. Good news about the speed though.
 
I agree with the OP. I did a clean install as well, and it was almost shocking how much faster everything is.

It felt like windows were responding before I actually clicked the buttons. I'm very impressed.

Doing a clean install also got rid of some lingering issues from Lion like Wi-Fi connection problems and slow connections to a Windows share.

Well, I know it's the right way, so I guess I'll have to suck it up...Time to start moving data...This is a days work to do all three, but from what you and others have said, it's the way to go....The price I pay for having three I guess!
 
Maybe it's blazingly fast because you did a clean install. From my experience, every mac is blazingly fast the first few months of a fresh install...

Agreed, but I vividly remember how fast Lion was when I did the last clean install. Now that I have all my programs running, including background processes like TextExpander, it is still MUCH faster than Lion was, even without some of that stuff installed yet.

It's the same build. I read an article about it being the same seed number yesterday.

Yep, a clean install is the way to go.
 
Clean install v. ?

I am new to mac. I've had my machine less than a year.

In summary terms - with a "clean" install - what is it that I lose from my current operating environment in Lion that I will have to set up?

Can someone point me to the best "how to" for a "clean" install?

Those that are seeing significant speed increases with a "clean" install - had you noticed your machine was running slowly before the install? Would you have gotten similar speed improvement with a clean install of Lion?

If my machine is running fine and fast now - still best to do clean install?

Thanks for any help!!
 
Best practice for a clean install is to copy over everything you need onto an external drive and/or create a bootable copy of your OS onto a different external drive. Then, download Mountain Lion from the App Store (when it comes out!). Then follow this guide: http://mashable.com/2011/07/20/lion-clean-install-guide/ . Even though it's for Lion, the same process works for Mountain Lion. I always choose to do a fresh install for a 10.x install.
