mountain lion makes 2011 air faster than 2012 air.

i got ML installed on 2011 13" air with specs of core i5 1.7ghz, 4gb ram, 256GB fs. and recently bought a new 2012 11" air with specs maxed out (core i7 2.0ghz, 8gb of ram but the flash storage is still at 128gb).

so the 2011 air is on ML while the 2012 air is still on latest OSX Lion.


i put a same big jpeg picture in adobe illustrator cs5, and exported it at the same time on both computers to a 300dpi, 45cmx45cm in size. it's converted from jpg to a PNG pic.

the interesting result was the 2011 air was faster completing it, beating the 2012 air by 10 seconds.

i hope it's the mountain lion that makes the improvement, not my 2012 being a dud.

anyone have the same experiences?

Could you try a test with a native OS X app (like exporting in Quicktime X)?
 
i tried converting a 1080p same video file to 720p on both computers.

my god! the old air beat the new one by 50%!! that is HUUUGEEE...

anyone can confirm this?

holy holy! i can't believe some coding improvement in ML makes the machine really faster. too bad i can't install ML on my new air yet since it's my primary machine.
 
Until you actually install ML on your 2012 machine to test, there's no way you can claim that it's the sole reason why it's causing certain processes to be faster.
 
Enough with placebo effect ML is a Lion with extra features the only thing you accomplish with these post is make apple richer all will run to install ML with the though is faster.

It's bull*hit, I don't believe the older will beat the new one that much - there is much better HW under the hood...:confused::confused:
 
It's not BS, Lion was terribly coded and is a mess, ML is Lion done right.

That's like saying Windows Vista running on i5 hardware is better than Windows 7 on a C2Duo. On paper, yes, it is. However, Windows 7 brought a lot of improvements in speed and stability, and the OS performs much better.

Same with Lion/ML. I know this because I had Lion on my MB Pro 13'' 2009 (hence, an old-ish machine already) and SL ran amazingly, Lion ran like a dog, and ML finally brought back a lot of the speed I had lost with Lion after upgrading. Now I just need to stick another 4 GB of RAM in this machine and it will hopefully last me another couple of years, fast and stable with Mountain Lion (and its future replacement, 10.9, should it be compatible).

QuickSync (finally!) being used, maybe?

i didn't ********. i think the coding improvence in ML makes it much more efficient, less buggy and faster like windows vista vs windows 7.

the first time i installed windows 7 on my old pc, it makes the pc faster than the vista and i was amazed by how good microsoft improved it.

I think Quick Sync requires 3rd gen Intel Core processors (Ivy Bridge), the 2011 MacBook Air have a 2nd gen processor.

It wasn't in Mountain Lion DP1 (clean install) compared with a clean install of Lion (fully updated). I was using the stock hard drive though.

Spite of that, I think DP1 didn't perform very well compared to latest versions of Mountain Lion.
 
What about Nvidia's 9400M Gt in the 2011. Grand Central would use the CUDA processors to likely help the operating system run faster then the Intel 4000 found in the 2012s.
 
yeah.....

Honestly to god, It looks like apple doesn't simplify its OS code on Lion (and Leopard) just so they can make some simple tweaks to make people "wow" at its successor.

Can this still be confirmed with the GM release?

Grand Central Dispatch can't do that.

GCD is for running programs on multiple CPU cores. It doesn't magically turn your program into something that can run on a GPU. This is wat OpenCL is for.
