Just wanted to share this!

I have early 2011 higher end MBP model. I even did a clean install a while ago but nothing seemed to help for my temperature problems. My fans would easily be 4000-5000rpm while listening to Spotify and surfing on Facebook. MacShop said there's nothing wrong with my computer. I know my partner has the same exact mbp but he has never had any temperature problems. My left side of the keyboard was always hot. Temps usually 65-80 degrees.

But yesterday after upgrading to Mountain Lion my mbp is a lot cooler. No more hot on the left side. And right now I have Spotify, Safari, Mail and Calendar open my CPU temp is 40 degrees. I can't believe this. Now this feels like MacBook Pro should feel like.

So if you think you have temperature problems (I have been thinking that since the day I bought this machine early 2011) you gotta try Mountain Lion! :)

This is great news. If I had one complaint about my MBP, it would be the heat it produces when I don't manually set the fans.

same here. When looking at youtube videos my late 2011 MBP would become a furnace and it would get very hot. Thats no longer an issue.

I have the exact opposite problem on my 2010 11" MBA. I went from average CPU temps in the 50C range to around 70C when at idle, and my fans are constantly running between 4,500 and 6,000rpm. My regular load in Lion barely made the fan go above 2,000.

Hi Acronyc, i have the same problem with a late 2008 unibody MBP... 70C without doing anything, what can we do?? maybe wait for a software update? or come back to snow leopard (which i used to have)..:mad:

My 21.5" 2011 iMac is running noticeably cooler since ML. Normally play a graphics intensive game for 20 minutes and it would be really hot on top and the CPU temp would be around 80 degrees, hard drive 56 degrees.

Since ML the CPU temp is upper 60's low 70's after even an hour of graphics intensive gaming, and the hard drive doesn't go above 50/51. Which is better!

Ditto on a mid-2011 13" MBA. Fan never ires now and it's cooler back-bottom-center and left (a bit warm on Lion). Moreover, everything's noticeably slicker and faster: start-up, applic launching, Safari (!), Help, VMware fusion, Aperture, Office, ..

Being cooler should mean longer battery life. Very pleased so far.

My 2011 15" MBP is now running at 78F while merely downloading an app from iTunes. i have it on sitting on an antec fan running on high speed. This is not good.

78F or 78 Celsius??

However I cannot understand the reason of this overheating... also after the finish of the file indexing the result is always the same... what can we do guys? wait for an update? downgrade to snow leopard (in my case)?

It's been 4 days since I've used mountain lion, and it is noticeably cooler than lion.

my mac is the iMac 27 3.1 with 12 GB memory, and I've notice that the GPU diode on lion hovering between 65-67 C doing my normal stuff (Xcode, browser, photoshop, etc)

and now on mountain lion the GPU diode hovers between 52-56 C, it is remarkable.

why I chose the GPU diode as the benchmark, because it's the highest number between other temps. the cpu also hover between 33-39 C, where in lion usually 43-46 C.

And I also did clean install with mountain lion. hopes this information would be useful.

Just wondering -- what is the application that was used to produce the image displayed above in post #11?

2011 Macbook Pro running cooler with ML

First I thought I was dreaming, but now I realize that my early 2011 Macbook Pro is running so much cooler since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion!!! I'm over the moon. It used to get so hot and the fans would blow like mad. I've upgraded 3 days ago and I haven't heard the fans at all !

Upgrade from Tiger to Snow runs hot due to PTMD

I have a late 2008 Aluminum MacBook and just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 with the upgrade to 10.6.8. I've isolated my problem to my PTMD file causing my computer to run hot. A solution that I found online was to replace the PTMD file with an old one but my problem is that I only have one PTMD file. I'm looking for an older PTMD file from 10.6.2 or even 10.6.1. Can anybody help me find an old file?

Thanks
