Mouse Advice <£25

Hi, I just got a MBP and wanted a mouse for gaming. I'll be playing Wesnoth, RTSs and Steam FPSs when they come out. I was hoping to pay under £25 (although I'd be very happy to spend as little as possible). Bluetooth would be great but I don't know if I can get that in my budget. I would stump up the extra money for a Magic Mouse because it would look so good next to my MBP but I heard that they were pretty mediocre and I can imagine they are awful for gaming.

As a side not, I've noticed that my MBP gets pretty hot on my knee sometimes. Would it be better for my mac to be on a flat hard surface or should I not worry.

Just go to the nearest store and test mice they have. People like different ones so it's pretty hard to tell, especially if dealing with a 25£ budget. Take one which feels good in your hand and has functions you like

I personally prefer a trackball and have for years. I like not having to "drag the mouse back to the pad" when doing extended panning of views or moving, it's much easier (and faster) to use a trackball for me now. (Easier to move a finger a tenth of an inch compared to moving an entire mouse)

I've had great luck in terms of performance and reliability from Logitech. I think I use the Trackman Marble which is a thumb-ball trackball, has a clickable wheel, and a Left, Right, Center button.

I also enjoy using the Apple Mighty Mouse for general browsing when I connect my iBook with a full Apple keyboard, so for me it really depends more on the game or what I'm doing.

I believe the Razer Deathadder 3G is £25 now, I bought one around a year ago and it's a really brilliant mouse. There's a lot of great tech in both Microsoft and Razer mice.

What you have to take into account is what kind of mouse user you are. There's 3 types I think. Claw- your palm doesn't rest on the mouse, good for gaming or anywhere that you need both precision and large movements. Palm- palm is in contact with the mouse. And a 3rd that I forget . I say this because I was a palm user for years without noticing, then when I bought my Deathadder it took a few weeks to really get used to it but now I couldn't go back.

I wouldn't use a Mighty Mouse at all. Maybe if I didn't run games since it's good for OSX navigation. Mine just gets used for its portability since it's BT.

Just get any Razer, Microsoft or Logitech mouse that's around £25. They're the big 3 when it comes to good quality mice.

TheLogitech MX518 fits in your budget. Some of my friends are using it.

TheG500 is a bit more, but offers a few advantages. My friend picked it up and likes it.

Anyways, the advantage of Logitech is their drivers, but it all comes down to what feels comfortable on your hand to state the obvious.

On the heat, just noticed your blurb, buy a notebook cooler. My wife uses one from Logitech which is for laps. I have the Antec Cooler 200 on my desk and a belkin one for portablility. They do make a difference.

And more importantly download Fan Control for OS X, it makes a BIG difference, in both OS X and Windows.

I set my base fan speed to 2k RPM and my lower threshold of heat to 40c. If you're doing heavy gaming, it might be better to set your base fan speed to 3k.

With my cooler below and that app, my UMBPro 17" operates at about 45c when doing work -- right now it's 43c. This was a HUGE improvement over my previous "idle" state, which was about 60c -- that's crazy when compared to my i7 920 PC's idle temps.
