I have a 3ghz 2008 Mac pro. I have a problem where the mouse neither the keyboard work once the Mac has booted up. I thought everything was fine today as the machine sorted to work agin. No the mouse and keyboard have stopped working, this happened when I put the machine into sleep mode.

I have a few different drives I can boot up from, the problem is still there even booting from other operating systems. Any ideas.

Check all USB ports.
Check with other USB devices.
If they are not USB keyboard and mouse repeat the checks with other Bluetooth devices.
If the problem is your Bluetooth module then don't fret, it's very cheap to replace.

Keyboard and mouse issues

I have tried an external memory stick in the USB ports but nothing happens. No light is present on the underside of the mouse when the machine has booted up.

No usb stick data is available when the stick is inserted...

Ok that's bad. Look at System Profiler and click on Diagnostics. If the hardware test results are not up to date reboot and run the diagnostics test after resetting the PRAM

If USB is broke fortunately it will cost little to buy the same computer again and transfer your hard drive.

Problems

Like I said I don't have access to the mouse or keyboard...thus I can't move the cursor to get to system profiling.

Oh yeah...ffs.

Then you have one last option. Reboot and see if the keyboard works before the OS boots up by either trying to reset PRAM or launching diagnostics mode. If the keyboard doesn't boot up even like that then you know it's your motherboard and not OS drivers.

I have the wireless keyboard and mouse now instead or the wired route that I normally take.

Anyway the wireless green buttons are activated upon the Mac starting up, but no caps light appears on the wireless keyboard when the system is fully booted. Neither does the trackpad work...although the track pad lights when the machine is first booted.

What keys do you push is it the Apple key,alt key and the p,r key to do a reset.

I've chucked out all the drive and gone through each one I turn to see if mac keyboard or mouse lights activate...the Mac has booted with a single drive. I carried out an reset after this was achieved. We shall have to see.

There are no usb slots working on the Mac ecept for the cinma display subs where the mouse and keyboard are plugged into.

Morning after and the mouse and keyboard have decided not to work again. This must be something easy as its not a permanent fault, it's an intermittent one.

The USB ports on the front of the Mac haven't worked for year, so I disconnected the usb cable for the front ports.
