Hi -

My new 640GB harddrive is on the way to replace my MacBook's 160GB harddrive. Being the genius I am, I realized I have this big brand new harddrive, an ethernet cord, no money, and a friend who is willing to let me back up my music/pics ect... on his Windows 7 laptop.

1.How do I go about connecting these two computers in order to back up around 120gb worth of data (mostly music)

2. Could I wipe my 160GB iPod and use it as an external harddrive for this process?(all the music that is on my iPod currently, is also on my MacBook which i'd be backing up onto my ipod...)

You can use your iPod as an external hard drive, but you can't make a clone of your computer hard drive like you can with a real drive. You can dump files and folders though, which might be good enough for what you want. It'll be able to save your documents and music and whatever pretty easily, but not your settings, and you'll have set up your Mac how you like it again.

Here's how from Apple's page.

One option would be to clone your drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (free) to a .DMG on your iPod, then when your 640GB comes, install Carbon Copy Cloner on it as well as OS X from the restore discs, then restore everything. Or you could just make a copy of your "User" and "Applications" folders onto your iPod (as well as everything else thats "important" to you) and then copy those onto the new drive :)

1. Put both computers on the same (private) network.
2. Open an SMB share on the Mac for the folders in question.
3. Mount that share on the Windows machine.
4. Copy your files to the Windows box.
