iPod move only movies to external?

Hi.
I have a brand new Macbook Air. 128GB is a bit tight for someone with 52GB of media in his iTunes folder, but I couldn't spare $300 more for the 256GB and really don't like keeping my music on an external.
I would, however, like to keep the few movies I have on an external. I'm already down to only 25GB free, so saving 5GB by moving those movies is certainly worth it.
I really only need to have access to the movies to sync them to my iPad.
I would prefer not to move the movies on and of the Air every time I want to sync but rather just leave them on the external.
My guess is that the way to do this is to UNCHECK the "copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" box in preferences when adding the movies, and then recheck it when I'm adding anything else.
Will this work? Any other suggestions?

Your method of unchecking the "copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" box in preferences when adding the movies, and then rechecking it when adding anything else, should work. It's the method I use to keep my movie files on an external and my music internal on my iMac.

what is the best method to move the movies alread in the itunes folder in the computer onto the external drive and retain all itunes related links? i ask this for the situation of digital copies that get downloaded from itunes or blueray combo packs and files already imported into itunes. for self made files, i understand to use the method described earlier.

You can leave the box checked and just hold down the Option key whenever you drag movies into iTunes. That'll create a reference to the original file instead of creating a copy for it.

I would just move them via the Finder. When you try to play one of the movies afterwards, iTunes might complain that it can't locate the original file. You can then tell iTunes the new location at which point a window should appear asking you whether the path should be used to fix other broken references. At least that's how I remember it working...
