iPod Movie Availability

I'm going to invest in an Apple TV and was wondering about movie availability on iTunes. I see the pre-orders page and it looks good but roughly do all big movies become available on the same date as the disc edition? And what about HD? So far I only have Valkyrie and Saving Private Ryan downloaded and as far as I can tell there is no HD version on the UK store at least so how often is there an HD version? For example I can't find an HD edition of The Dark Knight, with some titles it says "Also Available in HD on Apple TV" but not The Dark Knight, which is puzzling.
