Is there a way to transfer movies directly from my iPhone 4 to iMove on my MBP (not the iPhone app)? I can't seem to figure this out. If this is not possible, then that's real stupid.

I just use iPhoto, then you can bring it up on iMovie like that.

Or the app named 'Image Capture' if you want something simpler than iPhoto.

(I use iPhoto, but if you don't want to organize or search the media then Image Capture will just import it.)
