Movie's in two parts

I have the two disc addition of the lord of the rings movies. How can I make them in to one file so I don't have to switch files in the middle of the movie? I know there has to be a way to do this.

Did you convert the DVDs? If you have them in a QT format, open one and drop the other file into the picture. It'll ad them together.

One thing that you need to do that isn't spelled out in the link above is change your preference in DVD2One to allow large files sizes. Good luck.

There are two ways to do it. One way is to do as the other poster said and encode each disc separately and then join the two files into one using QuickTime Pro. Just open the first file, select all, and copy. Then open the second file and paste. Then save as a self-contained movie. It will create a .mov file.

The other way is to use a program called DVD2OneX (DTOX) and use the join function. You rip both discs and then run then through DTOX to create a single VIDEO_TS folder of the entire movie. Then run through HandBrake to encode.

I just tried the QT Pro solution on the two-disk "Fellowship of the Ring." It was dead simple. The last chapter of the main feature on disk 1 is the "continued on disk 2" message, so I told Handbrake to skip the last chapter of disk 1.

When I had the two Handbrake encodes finished, I opened the first part and dropped the second part onto the open window. WRONG--I needed to do it the other way round. Once that was set, I saved the file with a new name (so that, in case it didn't work, I wouldn't have to reencode the two halves).

The save only took a few minutes, and gave me a .mov file pretty much exactly the size of the two .m4v files combined. No additional transcoding was necessary: the file works perfectly in my Mac Mini/Front Row setup.

Chapter info is retained, except that the numbering starts over at "1" for the second half. I can still skip forward or backwards by chapter through the whole film.

You can do it either way, you just need to make sure you have the playhead in the proper location. That's why it's easier to open and copy the first part, then paste it to the second - the playhead is already at the start of the second half of the movie. Anyway, I'm glad it worked out for you.

Follow up....

I was actually working on the same movie today, however, I do not have QT Pro. It is my understanding that in the Snow Leopard release, QT Pro will be standard. I'm ripping my DVDs to put on iPhone using Handbrake, and just want to combine multiple discs. Can anyone verify the SL info?
